Okay...Everybody knows what a pain in the A@$ it is to change the fuel filter on a C4. My question is,now that it is changed, how often should I do it. Somebody told me that once it's changed for the first time, it should be changed every 10K or so. Is this true? Or can I get 30K out of it. The original was restricted at 40 some thousand. Comments and input appreciated. :BOW

I change mine yearly. I'm not familiar with the 93 but on the 85 it's a snap to change.

10K...its a small price to pay for an insurance policy. Fuel injection loves clean.

;stupid Not that you're stupid Jon, I'm just agreeing with you.:L

I'd like to do mine as well, but I hear it's a pain in the rear to do. Anyone have any experience changing the fuel filter in a '93? One guy told me that you nearly end up taking a fuel bath...is that true? :confused

It really is not that bad. Make sure you releave the pressure from the fuel system before you start and you dont get that much fuel loss. The other thing is do it when the cat is cool. You burn the @$#% out of your arm if you dont.

Be sure to undo the gas cap to relieve pressure then reseat the cap.

Fuel Bath

Sure do get a bath from that carcinogenic liquid known as gas. That's what they say anyway. Hell...I've been in gas for years...I should already be dead. Do change it with as little gas in the tank possible. Undo the fuel line holders near the passenger side rocker panels. Undo the fuel line holder top of engine. This gives you a little room to move the thing around after you remove the 10mm bolt from the strap holding the filter. Leave the strap on, just take the bolt out, you can slide it on the new filter later. You can get a fuel line wrench on the fuel line closests to the engine, the, use a socket to remove the filter from the hex on the filter closests to the rear of the car. (Watch the friggen O-rings on the fuel line, they gotta go back). Took me about two hours. Don't be afraid to wedge a wrench against the fuel line and body in order to make room for tightening or holding. Releasing the lines as previously described allows this. Oh yeah....remove the fuse for the fuel pump (F1) and crank the engine for about 10 seconds after it stops. Crack the fuel cap. Remove the pop off fuel rail cover and release the schrader valve to relieve remaining pressure. You will still lose some fuel so, have a pan available. Do this in a well vented area. I kept the ceiling fan on high with the garage door open. Betcha I could do it faster the next time!:eyerole

I took 2 line wrenches and replaced mine in 15 minutes...sure a bit of petrol fell out but it was an easy job...

I can't remember if the feed line kept draining on me, but a word of caution if you guys ever have both of the lines apart down there. The gasoline will siphon from the tank and drain to the ground if you're not careful. :eek

It is highly recommended, as a matter of fact it is mandatory, that you disconnect the hose from the tank at the connection by the filler neck. I was caught off-guard when I pulled my engine this time, and until I was finally able to catch somebody's attention, I felt like the little Dutch boy with his finger in the dike. I couldn't re-attach the fittings, and when I did, the ends of the lines were spewing gasoline all over the place.

The bad thing is that I had just asked a mechanic from next door if the gasoline would siphon and he told me no. It was probably the return line that was siphoning gas. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!! :hb
