Greed, not unions, brought GM down

American Greed & Laziness Combined

I believe that a lot of our problems come from poor leadership and the overall greed and laziness that we find in America today. Too many people out there want a reason to sue, so that they can sit on their couches and never work a day in their life again. Where are people that want to work hard and do a good days work for an honest wage?

I'm not a fan of unions, because as a low level business person, I believe they are a negativity to production. Why does someone who puts a tire on a new car at the assembly line get paid $15-20.00+ an hour that doesn't have any extra skill sets than someone who flips burgers at a fast food joint? Why do they deserve a retirement/health plan when that same burger flipper doesn't?

Why do CEO's get golden parachutes whether they're successful or not? I believe success itself should rewarded. I wish we had leaders like we had in the past, but, unfortunately in our current climate of suing first, very few people can take the risks that were taken in the past. Where's the incentive for risk taking? Where did accountability go for non-performance?

I actually think anyone who has a stake in the stock market, large or small, is just as much to blame. God forbid we invest in anything that is not making a crapload of money everytime the quarterly reports come out!! We want our share of the riches now!!

We've become a nation in which everyone believes they should have anything they want right now, and most are unwilling or unable to work towards a long term goal.

Until we all learn that what made us great as a nation was our ingenuity and fortitude, we will not be a great nation again. We all need to take ownership of the decline of the american economy, because, other than our beloved Vettes, who buys american anymore? What exactly is american anymore?

I find it interesting that one of the major points in the editorial is not discussed in the posts at all.

The unions didn’t bring down GM. In fact, if all the workers were paid nothing, GM would still be in bankruptcy. Thanks to the greed of bankers, mortgage loan companies and some unscrupulous investors, the U.S. economy failed.

These guys absolutely PLUNDERED the economy and not enough of them are in jail.

I absolutely agree with you on that one Jim!

I'd also like to see a couple of Congressmen in that same line headed to the slammer. :chuckle

On a more philosophical note... greed is closely related, in my opinion, to feelings of entitlement.

Agreed... but it'll never happen... :mad

The bankers are taking a pretty heavy hit, :eek As I recall previous administration's Note I said Administration with an S... put undo pressure on the banking industry through LEGAL action to entertain loans that should not of been made. Some small banks in all 50 States fell to the wayside because of actions from Janet Reno.

I'm just saying when looking for a scapegoat, I think there is more than enough blame for us all.. after all how many here stoodup and said "Hey that ain't right" and how many of us just looked the other way and said, I'm sure glad I got mine... :eyerole

In this case I don't have any problem with what came first, it wasn't the egg or the chicken, and it didn't start in the last 20 or 25 years ;) it's been brewing since the Liberated Social Engineering of 1960's :dance

YIKES what a subject. I have worked for Teamsters in NYC. And have worked for other companies w. out a union. Worked for myself last 17 yrs. The Gov't. is a LARGE part of the problem. Then Some UNIONS, with them it's Never enough. Always trying to squeeze more out of a company. I'ts just not right that SOME employees who have very limited skills or do low skilled labor. Get paid $15 to over $20 plus per hour, then tack on all the other benefits and then a lifetime pension. Come on really. That is Exactly why our nation and our cities are in such bad shape. A person WORKS for 20 yrs, or so. Then retires and lives off a pension for God knows how many yrs. Really folks. A little simple math shows us how we got into the mess WE are ALL in. Then the sin of GREED. How do we get of of this mess ??????
