Help! Hard Steering

Ok.
I give in to the mentality here.

Forget what I said about proper maintenance and repair procedures. Lucas Oil products can take the place of all that.

I mean....why should maintenance of Corvette power steering be any different than a rusted-out, 85 Ford pickup with 300,000 miles on it.

I'm hauling my rollaway to the scrap yard and buying five cases of Lucas Oil additives.
(giggle)
It was not my Intention to make anyone think that they don't need to do proper maintenance, but your assumption that Lucas power steering oil will not work is wrong just like you assumption that my truck is rusted out and ready for the scrap yard.
You know nothing about my truck to make such a statement is ludicrous.
You have once again proved that writing is not like actually doing the repairs,

I don't know if this should be recommended or not :eek

Every 2 years I use a Baster to suck out as much fluid from the PS Pump as possible, then replace it. It doesn't completely drain the PS System. I figure over the course of time I eventually get it all removed :D

I don't know how much is left in the System once I've sucked out fluid from the PS Pump Resevoir ;shrug Last year I used Lucas and the little leak around the Control Valve Stopped and the PS seems as good if not better than before ;)
(THANKS Jesse ;) )

Bud

Bud, I have been using a baster for years! Seems like it was designed for these PS systems! You are correct in assuming you will eventually get it all removed. :thumb

SAVE the gosh darn :w

you can't make everyone happy.I don't even try the info is out there one way or another. some people will shop till they find the answers they want Iam sure hib has big shoulders :thumb Steve

Hey Hib, Mr. WRITER. "that's rEdicilous"? If you're such a fancy writer don't you proof read your own stuff? Here we are with another insult. Do you know a lot of people do not like you? I have a feeling that if you left this forum there would be a huge collective sigh of relief. Your insulting posts denigrate everyone. You humiliate people, you insult them, and are generally rude and mean. I would NEVER want to associate with you in "real" life. I have never seen such childish, boorish behavior in my life. You jump in and insult people and leave.

I'm sorry but that's rediculous.:chuckle

If you have a problem with the steering rack or the power assist with symptoms such as discussed in the lead post of this thread, no pour-in additive, much less a usless product like what most of Lucas Oil's concontions are, will help.

If the system is leaking, the proper way to proceed is to fix the leak rather than adding chemicals with alter the condition of worn out seals. Leave the "conditioner/stop leak" products for people with fifty-dollar, beater Cavaliers. Corvettes need to be properly serviced and maintained.

The first thing to do is get the FSM and read its information on troubleshooting the power steering.

Then, I'd inspect the steering linkage and front suspension for any problems that might cause the steering to bind. Don't forget to look at the u-joints in the steering shaft.

If you don't find anything there, I'd carefully check the operation of the rack and the steering pump. If you find something faulty, replace as necessary.

Remember, worn suspension parts, screwed up tires and bad alignment can cause trouble with steering.

If the problem is strictly fluid-related, you don't need any additives or other sillyness like that. I'd flush and refil the system. Use either the OE GM power steering fluid or a good synthetic such as Red Line's Steering Fluid. If you race the car or regularly drive in very hot weather a premium synthetic steering fluid will improve durability.

Most people never change steering fluid but, guess what...for best durability you need to do that because the system has no filter. I'd do it every 3yrs/36,000 miles.

Amen to that brother (having been flamed twice):mad

Thank you. I just cannot tolerate boorish and rude people. If I get kicked off oh well, there are other sites. Let him be all by his lonesome here for all I am concerned. It is VERY difficult for me to be treated like that by the likes of him and I cannot tolerate seeing it done to others. He is a big T**D in a little bowl.

Hey Hib, Mr. WRITER. "that's rEdicilous"? If you're such a fancy writer don't you proof read your own stuff? Here we are with another insult. Do you know a lot of people do not like you? Please don't encourage him to go to another Vette forum ;LOL:boogie

I like Hib's style, the way he writes and the patience that he has for some of the stupid questions we ask (myself included). As for him leaving the forum, be careful what you ask for. That would be a great loss to the CAC. People like Hib, C4C5 and the Junk are the backbone of our advice/help group.
Lets take one of our newer members for example,,, since joining all he has done is ask question after question after question. Members have offered advice and suggestions only to have this new person insult us for trying to help. Now if I was to ever offer advice to this person, I'd tell him first, quit trying to fix your car online.... find a mechanic that you trust ( be it an independent or at a good Chevy dealer, yes there are some) and have him go over the car from front to back. List every thing he found wrong and then decide what order to proceed in, i.e., what can be fixed at home, what needs professional work. Prioritize the work. Safety items first, nice to have items last. Then the second thing I'd tell him is to Chill Out, Dude... We're here to have fun, not see how many people we can tick off.
But then, if I was to offer this advice, I'd get flamed or insulted myself so I'd better not say anything.;)

Scott

Hi Scott, first I have never suggested or asked that Hib LEAVE the forum. However, I have received NUMEROUS PM's about his behavior and they all applauded my response to his denigration and insult to Mr. Killebrew. You have NO idea how many people have PM'd me and how many can't stand Hib. As long as he doesn't offer me any advice or insult me I will be okay. As for Junk, well, he's on "vacation" for certain reasons which I will not divulge. As for the other people you mentioned, I have never heard of them.

Best regards,

Paul

OK you're BOTH right!! I've also used additives to temporarily fix a problem in all my cars. Sometimes it lasts so long it seems permanant. Is it the proper fix in the long run?...probably not. Does the Vette deserve to be repaired properly. Heck Yeah! But like most enthuisiasts who enjoy older vettes I dont have loads of dispensable income so I prioritise ( I think I mispelled that...anyone gonna jump down my throat?) :chuckle. Just so long as my temporary repair doesnt come back to bite me in the you know what by causing more extensive repairs down the road I do the best I can for the time being.
Nobody's perfect whether you're Mr Goodwrench/Badwrench, claim to be a Specialist or are a journalist :beer

Did you mean "disposable" income? If you are dispensing income, I want to be the first in line! :rotfl:rotfl:rotfl:rotfl:rotfl

I am only kiddin'! Please do not take offense!

SAVE the gosh darn :w
