Just a quick note to introduce myself. My name is Steve. I just acquired a 1984 L83 Corvette. My first Corvette. Seems like I adopted a neglected car. Rescued is more like it. I know nothing about these cars so 5his should be interesting to say the least. So far here is what I've discovered. It runs hot. 198-200°. Hope the gauge is wrong. Headlights dont work and it idles at 1300 rpm. You will be hearing a lot f4om me in the coming months. I dont need an 11 second car....just want it to run right.

Welcome Steve. If you have cable, try to find a rerun of the British program "Wheeler Dealers" where the boys rehab an 84 C4. That episode shows a pretty good inspection and repair scenario. They even troubleshoot and repair the headlights that don't flip. I have seen that episode a couple times, the latest last week. If nothing else, it will give you a good starting point and maybe the confidence to tackle the work. The reruns will run all Summer.

Welcome to the CAC, Steve.

The L83 in your '84 has a 195° thermostat.
it is not running hot.

If you had said 240°, then you'd need to worry.

That said, the broken headlights ande the 1300 rpm idle show you have some electrical work and some engine controls service ahead of you.

Don't start your new DIY project without a Factory Service Manual. CAC sponsor, Zip Products sells them.

You may be tempted to purchase an aftermarket "repair manual"but–don't do it unless you've run out of cat box liners.

Headlights now work. After much overthinking (remember...this is my first Corvette and I've owned it for 2 days) I discovered the rocker switch is only hi/low beam designation and the dimmer is a PULL switch that turns the lights on. Duh.
I feel so stupid.
SO...that being said...seeing as how it's NOT running hot, the only issue I have, THUS far, is the 1300 rpm idle.

Ok...it idles at 1300 rpm in neutral but 9000 in gear with my foot on the brake. I know nothing about the history of this car but it has obviously had some beefin up done on it. It sounds means and just fly's.
Does that sound normal??

When you get the manual, first thing you need to do is check your "minimum air" on the throttle bodies and then check your "Idle Air Control" (IAC) valves on each....that will cure your idle and they're both easy to do

Will do.....when I get it. Them things are $100.00. Gunna hafta wait a bit on that.
