Hinge Spring - Easier Said Than Done

I'm trying to change my driver door hinge spring. I've seen the installation instructions that tell you how to align the spring in the upper hole and slot and then use a lever to shift the bottom of the spring aft until it moves into the lower slot. Problem is - I can't figure out where to apply the lever without breaking fiberglass.

Should I remove the door first? The instructions didn't say.
