I can smell the clutch burning.

Last weekend I let a friend take me for a ride in the CE. He could drive stick but not well. He was pretty hard on the clutch. It was stinking when we got back, just went around the block, 10 minute ride. I have been smelling clutch ever since.

How can I tell the condition of the clutch?

The car only has 22000 on it. Mostly lady driven from 9000 to 20,000 miles. She was second owner.

You should have plenty of life on the disc, but you should take the time to flush and bleed the fluid from the clutch's hydraulic activation system. The fluid absorbs water from the air. This may have caused deterioration or corrosion and further caused something in the barrel of the slave cylinder to hold up the plunger from returning all the way. Hence holding the pressure plate just a little, akin to riding the clutch.
