I'm installing a low temp fan switch, and in my '90 there's a factory plug there right now. I'm trying to avoid buying the $35 GM tool that's used to remove it. Has anyone done this, and what tool is used? Any tips on removal, as I'm sure it could be a bit difficult to back out & remove. Thanks!

Well, usually they're screwed in and since your head is probably aluminum and the plug is not it's going to be tight. I'd spray it with some penetrating oil and let it sit overnight before you try. Depending on the type of plug it's either an allen head or square head. If it's square and you're lucky then it will be a 3/8" or 1/4" like a standard socket wrench. If you're unlucky it will be some odd size and you will have to find the tool or make it.

Oh yea, when you get it off all your coolant will come pouring out from that side of the engine if the coolant is still in there.

Good luck

PS: It's much easier with the head removed.

Good luck, I tried to get mine out, no luck that thing is in there. I was afraid I going to break something so I gave up.

Go to Home Depot and buy some square rod. Cut it down some. Use Vise grips to turn it. Worked like a charm for me.

How are you wiring the Switch?

I think the easier way would be to get someone to program a new PROM with Lower fan temps, since the ECM controls both fans on a 90

sorry about the sig, i'll have to reduce it.

its a lower fan temp kit i got from MAD, which is a temp sensor and a wiring harness. the lower temp sensor get screwed into the cylinder head where the factory plug is now, and is directly tap wired to the 2 fan relays on the radiator shroud. This way both fans go on at 200 degrees instead of 238.

Since I could not get mine out I did have the chip reprogrammed to do the same thing, works like a champ and was actually easier to do.

Is there any less expensive way to prgm your fans to come on eariler without spending a whole lot of money on one of those Hypertech devices, I have 94' so there is no chip to prgm.
thanks
