How to customize the shift arm on a c5 to be 'stick and ball' style?

Hey guys, I want to customize my shifter to be the 'stick' style without the rubber boot. I will make a custom rubber boot for it just for the bottom of the shifter rod. I want it to look like the picture, perhaps with a different shaft, but similar. The thing is about is I want to use my stock shifter for this. Does anybody know how I can do this? Do I have to cut my shifter at the base and weld on a rod? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure exactly why you would need to cut the shifter rod. Are you aware that they sell shifter balls that fit directly onto the stock shaft? The only hard part is removing the stock shifter knob. There is a key (similar to a key on a crankshaft snout) that has to be removed with a pair of vicegrips before you can pull the stock knob off it, then you can put a Hurst or similar shift knob on there.

I am interested in doing the same thing for my GS. I would like a Hurst shifter like in the picture. I know they make the shift knobs for the current shifter but they make it about an inch shorter and that won't work for me......I have not seen anything like it out in the market place.....

Not if you just get the knob and not the entire shifter. The Hurst knob on my car screws on with a locknut, so I have about an inch of height adjustability to play with.

I have done quite a few of them. Let me know if you are interested.

Did you happen to take a few pics of the ones you installed.....? Is the C6 the same as the C5 conversion?

The C6 should be the same if I understand your question correctly. The only difference in C5 to C6 shifters is in the slightly shorter and bent shift levers, with a different mount for the knob, everything else is the same including the shift box that mounts to the torque tube.

I do have pictures, but my computer will not let me attach them to an e-mail for some reason. The set up I have now in my car is a chrome Hurst shift lever with a white Hurst cue ball knob like the early '60's style. I have many different knobs that I rotate back and forth, including the stock OEM knob at times. Personally, I really like the look of the chrome Hurst lever.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the good input. I was wondering what kind of feeback I was going to get. What I'm after is a long shift shifter arm that is stainless steel. I aware that I can change out the knob easily. Refer my pic.

I think that would look awesome in a vette! I talked to a weld shop and they want to cut off my stock shifter as far down as they can, below the thick black middle section, and then weld on a stainless steel rod. I don't think i'm going to go as fancy as making a slotted insert, but i may, i will at least make a custom rubber boot like in my picture below haha! oh well I work with engineers everyday and this is the kind of stuff i give them to work with..

Does anyone make a "gated" shifter for the C5? - Corvette Forum
