I took a stock 1989 conv with a 6 speed tranny, 3.54 rear, and added a K&N air filter with open face plate, Walker SS Ultraflo mufflers with new rear Y-pipe with pressure balance cross tube, and Performance chip for the ECM( I have a hypertech street runner which came with the car and a custom chip from Jeff). Can anyone tell me what the HP and torque increase is with this setup?

Every car is different...
My 89 Automatic Coupe laid down 249 rr wheel hp on a DynoJet (w/ a chip, flowmasters, cut lid/K&N)
FWIW, it ran 13.5@105 (w/ a 2.59 cog)

Looking at the C4 Sourcebook they talk about 5hp gain each for the K&N, and open faceplate. Another 10 for the chip and 20-40 for the flo thru muffler sysytem. I wonder what the real number is?

:confused

You will be LUCKY

If you get an actual 7-10 hp increase at the rear wheels.. Do you have a better than stock coil?

Do you have the stock air cleaner cover? THAT is WAY restrictive..

Now the good news is you got the backside of the engine breathing easier.. so now attack the front.. the throttle body & the runners would be next.. to get more AIR in the front of the engine.. Mini ram?

Next would be cam & heads.

It's a big monkeyF**K

You change 1 thing.. and it ripples down the system... and you wind up spending LOTS O dough bit by bit... then where you got it where you want it.. you do the math and find out you could of bought a NEW crate engine for less. So be careful in the add on game.

I'm not going crazy with this project. I do have an open face retaining plate for the new K&N air filter.

So as one Doctor to another

Get a nicer coil... new wires.. route em correctly( get the GM clips).. that would be MY next move.

Although I did not dyno my car when new, it was advertised as a 240 hp Automatic Coupe from GM's numbers - Those are factored at the crank on an engine dyno and I am sure the rest of GM's "controlled area" for testing...

Now, 240hp at the crank Stock and now w/ 46k on it, it has 249 hp at the Rear Wheels (number should be a lot less, due to drivetrain loss...)

Chip, exhaust, open lid w/ K&N -ran 13.5@105 on the original Gatorbacks... - Stock heads, cam, stock intake and exhaust manifolds. Every car is different - those are my experiences :)
hope this helps :beer

Vig,

You're right about those heads being big time $$$ I checked out the TPIS site last night and came across a set (I think the price was for a set) of ported and polished heads. They wanted $1225 with an exchange!:eek

HP don't come cheap does it?:L

FWIW, the driveline loss on an Automatic is roughly 17%...
Take 17% from the factory rated 240 hp and you have 199.2hp so it looks like the chip, exhaust, open lid w/ K&N added exactly 50 hp over stock :D

Did you buy that car new?

I find it hard to believe that a stock '89 with just a chip, k&n and a exhaust sytem added 50 rwhp.

Im not saying the car did not put down the numbers, im just saying that there had to be more done to the car besides that.....

Dont ever trust what a book says unless its the Helm Shop Manual.

Do you really think a flo-thru exhaust is going to give you 20-40hp on a stock engine?

More like 5-10.

If you had a 396 with a huge cam, and the stock exhaust and then changed to the flo-thru, then you might get that 20-40.

Yes, since new.
I have kept it in "proper tune" over the years and it runs like a champ :)

Car did put down the numbers, ran the times, nothing else done.
Some cars run better than others...

Frankly, I was a little surprised that the car ran as well as it did w// the 2.59's as I had planned on switching to 3.07's back in 90 but the deal fell through:(
I will add, I remember when ALL you could do to a car was a chip and K&N (back in late 80's) and the Flowmasters on the car are the same set I put on back in Nov.89 (one of the first pairs ever made for a C4 :) )

thats a 300 hp car at the flywheel...and with the long runner L98....hummm

oh well....

ever though about putting it back on the dyno today to see if it still makes the power?

Mabey the dyno operator or such did something wrong.

I mean, 50 from a chip, exhaust and K&N...thats the kind of power catalogs advertise.......

:v

Actually, that was the results from a year ago... (they didn't have chassis dyno's back in the day)
I am really pleased w/ that car and the power it makes :)
I will add, it has no "freebie mods" such as the so called "no frisbee" and it still has the screens in the MAF. Stock pullies, etc.

Funny thing is, I have an 89 GTA that ran 14.3 back when it was stock - folks figured that car to be "modded" as most GTA's are pigs :( a friend of mine w/ his nearly identical (his had "twin cats") ran 14.2 in the 1/4 mi. bone stock.

As I said before, every car runs differently... I keep my cars in decent tune - maybe I got lucky w/ the cars I bought, maybe it is the 89's good fortune ;) who knows...
enjoy :beer

Maybe

somebody slipped a TORNADO in there...

You know the cheese grater and 89X2 didn't catch em...

50 hp from flomasters/chip/k&n... Hmmmm

I smell a fish.....

Were the test done on the same dyno, same operator??

The ONLY difference between our 2 cars is your K&N vs my Fram.. and I do 230 on the dyno.

Some Dyno read different than others.. ask 69 my way when he did his@ Sharkfest ( or someother vette gathering) he was to embarassed to post the dyno results.

I think calibration of dyno's from place to place is VERY different.

Just my .02

No "Tornado" slipped in there :eyerole

The Chip alone took the car from a 14.0 to a 13.5 in the 1/4 mi although I did put a fresh set of plugs into the car and indexed them...

I will say it one more time, evey car is different, and all cars "react" differently when you start to mod them...

I never dynoed the car stock - I said what the "factory ratings were" at the crank.

my 87 coupe is the same as 89x2's 89 coupe basically except bone stock. same 240 hp 350 torque base numbers. i never dynoed it but track numbers don't lie. my best time is 14.24 and a best 60' time of 2.04. i think it is ver possible to achieve 13.5's out of my car with these same mods. keeping a car in tune and knowing how to tune to conditions is the biggest part of the equation. i got 46k miles on mine now and will be doing these same basic mods just to dip down in the 13's.

pulled info from another post of mine....

i'm thinking about finally doing slight mods to it nothing radical though just enough to pick up an extra 50ish. i got a 3 year/36k mile warrenty on her and not really pressed i'm approaching 50k in miles at 46k now and i'm already looking for my second vette and hoping to pick up an LT4 or maybe even a ZR by fall. we shall see!

mods i have planned so far are a 2800 stall, 52 mm tb, open airbox/k&n filter/airfoil, fuel pressure regulator, a new chip, a b&m shift kit and some muff eliminators! i hate hearing my intake injection over the exhaust tone on the stock muffs. i figured this will put me close if not over the 50 extra'ish and with the stall it'll get that 2.59 rear gear a moving! i'm hoping for atleast a .5 reduction in ET if not a full second and a full second would put me to 13.20'ish maybe next year an intake but when i do the intake i'm doing the heads and cam also

89x2 who did your chip ?

who did your chip, as there are many people out there that advertise that they do them

Mike-

I got my chip from Jeff who is on :CAC

Use the search function on this page to locate him. He will customize the chip to your mods. Are you a Doc like the Vettedoc Mike?
