injectors shutting down...help!

Now that you are talking fuel pumps, where is the fuel pump relay located in an 87 coupe? The problem I posted today is similar to this one. In my case the car started on Sunday and shut off after idling for 3 minutes. It has not started again so I will have to check the fuel pump and the relay.

update....

it WAS the ECM !!!! Replaced it yesterday, for $220, and car runs fine now. I found a place that sells em for $110 though, so i'm gonna have my mechanic put my old one back in, then go buy it myself and save $110... looks very simple to install, and since he's cost me lots of money already, it's the least he can do!!!

another problem though, interior lights came on again today, that was one of my original problems... security light keeps flashing, but i can't reset it, i tried making the alarm go off by locking door w/ window down, then reaching inside and opening door to set off alarm, but it won't go off, security light just keeps flashing, and putting key in and turning does not reset alarm now...

is it possible that the new ECM just needs to "learn" the car?

thanks....Doug

I'll dig into the lighting issue later tonight

Wow that IS weird....

I would have NEVER bet on the ECM.

DAMN !!!

ok, listen to this!!! I took the car back to the mechanic, he took out the new ECM, no problem... he said he'd stick with the AC Delco, but i told him the $110 model was OEM reman, so he said ok... I drive my car home, w/ the old ECM in it, and it sounded ok, no real problems... so i say to myself hmmmm, maybe i should let it run for a while, see if it starts stalling out again. Ran for an hour, no problem...i said ok, well, i'll drive it around for a while, see if it's ok. I get in it, and the speedo and odometer gauges are out. Nothing showing at all. I turn the car off, and now it won't start again, just doing what it had been originally, turning over but not even trying to start. So i figure it's the old ECM gone bad, and take it out and go get the $110 model. Put it in, and nothing ! Still no speedo or odometer, still no start! Ughhhh, this is driving me CRAZY !!! Anyone have any ideas / suggestions? I checked all of the fuses in the panel, plus the ones underneath the glovebox. All good. I disconnected the batttery for a half hour, to drain car's memory. Nothing... still the same, no start, no gauges...
help !!! anyone ???

Fusible links!

Do you have Yahoo IM?

Vig~

And this

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7501&highlight=Fuel

The deal here is ..IF the fuel pump is drawing excessive current it WILL take the link out... that link is ECM power as well.

This is the 4rd car I have "E-Worked" on that has these symptoms.

I would check everything in the link area.

Vig~

PS load Yahoo! It's free... and I can't get AOL here from work

vigmann @ yahoo
vigmannn @ AOL ( After 6:00pm PST)

Vig... would that link going out cause my speedo and odometer lights to not work?

Going out on a limb here...

Remember internet auto repair ( electrical & electronic ) can only be done by the criminally insane, I offer these OPINIONS.. based on my experience.

That being said... yes it might...

But I do not have the car in front of me, nor is my test equipment probing it.

But.. hey anything for a fellow Vette Head.

If the ECM worked .. for ANY time period.. that kinda takes it out of the loop.. and proves that it is good.

Give me a better description of your dash failure.

Do the LCD's go away ( no digit's?)

OR

Is it just the backlight....

I have a 93 & 88 shop manuals at home.. I'll dig a bit.

Are you mechanically & electrically inclined?

Vig~

i am mechanically (to an extent), but not electrically inclined...

I think this has something to do with the security system, because when the new ecm was installed (the 1st one) whenever i started the car, the security light would flash real fast for about 30-45 seconds, even while driving, then stop flashing. When i tried to reset the security system, i couldn't get it to "go off", by locking it and then reaching in the window and opening door manually...

Now, this newest problem, there is no digital dash stuff at all, speedo, odometer, or security flashing light (no digits for the speedo or odometer). I do get the lights on the right though, the service engine soon, abs, battery, etc. when i turn key to on position.

thanks again vig...

Security system

The door switches get funky after a time along with the lock cylinders..
you must make sure that the switch ( read key ) is slightly OVER rotated past the 12:00 position.. then brought back to 12;00. See if that clears up the security issue.. the bad news is.. they do not make the door electrical switches anymore. Try this on both doors.. you MIGHT want to spritz some electrical contact cleaner down on the switch wafers from above ( window down) you can JUST see the back of the switch housing.. will scan later tonight.

The lack of "Digits" indicates a BIG failure.. do you have an OHM meter?

Vig~

no, no OHM meter...i had it towed to mechanic this morning, couldn't get it started at all, this car is driving me nuts... the worst part is, it's my only car!

the security issue must be a part of the whole dash problem, cuz that light doesn't show now either, must be preventing the car from starting. The mechanic had replaced a switch in the driver's side door 3 weeks ago, that was one of my original problems, interior lights staying constantly on...

Well, i'll keep ya posted on any progress made, i am so damn frustrated...

Don't worry, you are in good hands with Vigman. He has been helping me with my car that shuts down when I least expect it. I think we are getting close to resolving this issue. I know it is VERY frustating having a car you enjoy that keeps getting you into trouble. I would not have imagined to have so many problems with my Corvette. But I am not going to sell it, regardless of my wife's recommendations. She sometimes gets ****ed off when she sees the car just sitting there instead of riding in it. One would imagine that America's premier sports car would be a little better and not so troublesome sometimes but that is the way it is. Maybe we bought "lemons". But grin and bear it. Things like that must happen also to Ferrari or Porsche owners too.

If I were you, I would disable the factory alarm system and have a qualified installer put in a good aftermarket alarm system.

DRK

That switch is not the one I am refering to ( I did read that post)

Your problem is a power buss feed issue..I have to get a 91 book..It will take a few days

I do want to give you good advise.. and I think the 93 electrical feeds are different.

Vig~

thanks for all your efforts Vig, it is greatly appreciated! I'll be calling my mechanic this afternoon, to get the BAD news...he told me yesterday he thinks when i put the old ECM back in and let it run for an hour that it burnt out another computer... will update you later...Thanks again...

Doug

This smells like a LOAD to me

Not liking this ONE bit!

Vig~

Doug

I need you to do something.. take a look under the hood.. behind the battery..look down.. do you see a black plastic square with ALOT of red wires in a group under a single stud.

Vig~

carr's at the garage, i'll have to check tomorrow...whaddaya mean "under a single stud"? All the wires coming out from a bolt head?

thinking about it, i do remember seeing a bunch of wires down below the battery, on the right side, can't remember if they're red though, they might be...

what does that mean?
