Removed my intake manifold on my 1972 454. There is a ton of burnt and charred oil (like coal) between the intake and heat shield. I'm assuming that the best way to remove this crap is to remove the shield then rivet it back in place after clean. What is the safest correct way to remove te shield? Then how do I re install it?

Use a sharp chisel to get under the rivet heads and pry them up, then use dykes or Channellocks to pull them the rest of the way out. GM still has the pin rivets with the sharp splines; P/N 10229247 - 10 to a bag.
