I just spent a few hours doing some last minute upgrades before the Pony Express coming up next week. I put in a $500 new 4 core radiator (the old one had less than 5K on it, aftermarket). It was hot today, well over 90. I drove home at about 10 PM, so it was under 80.

I was still running in the upper 190's and up to 210 and above coolant and close to the same on oil. I was looking for 20 degrees or so cooler, as advertised, or suggested. I'm not gonna talk about my chip programming right now. Just throwing out a question in general. 180 Robert Shaw. I don't have a lot of time to feel comfortable with these temps. Off on Teusday for HIGH ambient temps and HIGH speed. I'm not excited about 160 thermostats.

And Mic, I didn't get to it! First thing tomorrow, but I don't think that's the problem ;) 383 stroker with All the godd stuff :) If you read this and you've got an idea. Please, bring it on :beer
 
Water Wetter? It took about 10-15 degrees off the running temps of my old turbo Subaru. After the 3rd radiator started to silt up, it was all that kept the car in the good range...

Meant to pick some up yesterday. I'm glad I didn't! I needed to see that there was NO change. Mic told me to check my plugs, guess what.

Now I gotta get a chip burned-FAST! Unless anyone has any other ideas. I do have an AFPR, it's at about 45lbs. I hope I haven't done much damage :(
 
Are you using the right heat range plugs? That's something I'm wondering about; whether all the changes we're making will require hotter or cooler plugs.

Oh yea, I meant to mention that. As recomended by my other friend Rich who is running the same setup as I am (except he has different heads and CR) I am running NGK R, V-Power FR5 plugs, and they are hotter than stock.
 
now aren't you glad you checked those plugs? i think with some more fuel pressure and a 160 stat your temps will come down in the 160-170 at the most 190 range for the race. what size injectors are you running? don't seem to be no grey streaking thru out the ceramic so it looks like the range is right on. your just running a bit lean. most likely in thte 13.5:1 range or a bit higher on the AF.
 
The high amibient air temps probably had something to do with it. Both my Vettes will run 10-20 degrees hotter when the air temps get into the 90 degree range and both systems are clean with fresh coolant and even the original radiators (the 87 has a 180 degree stat and the 92 has the OEM 195 stat). Assuming you have the A/C condenser still in place, is it clean? Any debris in it??

Thanks, but I meant the picture of the spark plugs. What can be visually seen in that picture that tells something about the condition of the engine or the fuel/air mix?

the plugs show a lean condition. Moon is fighting a heat problem and i suggested to check the plugs. old school tuning to it's fullest ;)

grey/light grey = a lean condition

light brown/brown = good condition

black/gooey black = a rich condition

if the plug ceramic was white with grey streaking that means your off on the heat range of the plug (can't remember which way but i think white with grey streaks is too cold) if the ceramic is white with no streaking your right on the heat range.

In Moon's case big stroker motor with a lean condition will build heat alot faster as Gas actually disipates the heat out of the engine in the combustion chamber when the plug fires it burns the fuel then the fuel and heat escapes. Gas also is a lubricant for the cylinder wall itself. if there is not enough fuel the heat transfers to the cylinder walls and the piston itself and can cause serious motor problems down the road. thats why alot of guys burn holes in the piston running race fuel with alot of timing or nitrous with too much timing.

I would guess that the ECM is maxed out, trying to add fuel to achieve 14.7:1. Upping the fuel pressure adds more fuel on each pulse, which will richen the mixture, but I believe the best fix is a properly programmed ECM, running 'stock' pressure, as Moon seems to intend.

Also, ensure that your fans are coming on. After I got my car to cool while driving, the traffic heat-up issue surfaced again. The key was the lack of airflow at low/no speed. I found a bad connection at the fan relay; fixed with a small, black plastic tie strap to secure the connector, which had a fatigued 'keeper'.
