Just changed injectors

I have a 1991 L98 with 40k miles on it. Yeah. It too was hardly driven by its original owner.

My car too started running rough and wouldn't hold idle so I took it to the Chevy dealer since I knew of nobody else in my area. Diagnosis: Bad #8 Fuel Injector. Replaced: $300 labor; $147 for ONE injector. It ran smooth after that bu a month later, same problem again. Back to the dealership. Diagnosis: Bad #1 Fuel injector. So, instead of replacing just that one and praying the other FI's don't go bad, I elected to replace the rest of the 7 FI's and pay only the one time $300 labor fee. $1,400 later, the car is running smooth and purring like a kitten. Been like that for a year now. So your prices are typical dealership price. Still freakin' expensive though.

GM Multec injectors have some steel parts internally. With a car that's only been driven 2400 miles, undoubtedly the car has sat for very long periods of time without running. There is always a very small moisture content in gasoline which comes mainly from storage in underground tanks. Even that small moisture content, when it sits for a long time in the injector, causes rust. Once the steel parts in the injector begin to rust, the game's basically over because rust can't be stopped. The rust eventually develops into particles which drop off inside the injector and can plug the discharge holes and or clog the ball-socket assembly inside the injector. The result is either leaking or restricted/plugged injectors.

The solution is to drive the car much more often, use a detergent-based injector cleaning on a regular basis and, during replacement, use RC Engineering injectors which have stainless steel internals.

Cool site! Have you used them? What was your experience?

I haven't used them but a friend did and he's pleased as punch a year later. His engine, like mine, is bone stock and used as a daily driver.

DANg that was pricey. Live and learn. Vette forums are not only a way to indulge in a passion but also a way to save money. I paid for my 700-R4 rebuild $2400 bucks:crazy just for the rebuild, shift kit and higher stall converter. Wont ever spend even a bit amount of cash without forum research...I do research now before I wash her:D
