Ken's Engine Project...

Well, that didn't do enough to quiet it. :(

I'll try the different sound capsules next. ;)

Hey Ken, you got some fish back there? And is that a velour couch I see on the left there? :L

155 pages! :eek I can hear a tree somewhere's crying. :cry BTW, is that an exhaust canister between your legs or are you a magically endowed robot? :L

I know, I know... but I just couldn't help it. :L :L :L

Velour!! Yeah, and I got a velvet Elvis hanging on my bedroom wall! That is so-o-o- tacky!! :LROTFLMAO:L

The fish is Mr. Plecostomus if you please. ;)

Velour! I would have expected that from Len!! :L

_ken :w

Oh, and you can call me "Mr. Data". ;)

Like this? Fishy.

Hey, where is Len? I haven't messed with his head in awhile, either. He's probably smoking dope! :crazy :L :L

Back to the topic, though. That thing didn't do anything for the sound at all? Geez.... you must got some magically endowed car too, Mr.Data. I bet that goes over with the ladies! :L

I know..... I'm very bad.... :(

Somewhere in these threads is that very same picture I used last year when I showed him off. :gap
Comments: Not for the beginner, this fish is best left to the experienced fish-keeper familiar with catfish.
:L I don't know about that; he's adapted quite well, for several years now, to my ineptitude and inconsiderate forgetfullness about feeding him and changing his filter. The first one did commit suicide though by jumping out of the tank while I was at work. :L

As for the part about "Sexing" being difficult, I haven't figured it out yet. :o

_ken :w

Oh yeah! The TOPIC was sound. :crazy

The device you see is what they call a "Touring Module". It is basically a hollow tube with those three baffles; similar to, if not the very same, baffles used in motorcycle pipes. They helped quell the noise somewhat, but not enough to drive on a daily basis (or legally for that matter). Hopefully the new "capsules" will help me, if not I may have to lose the sidepipes. :(

Hey Ken,
Is yours bigger than mine? Your Plecostomus that is. My Mr. P is getting about big enough to fillet. I'll try to get a measure on him next time he is lounging next to the glass.

Tom

It said that the things only get to be about 12" long in the wild, but mine is at least that long, and I only have a twenty-five gallon tank for it. I was always under the impression they grew as large as their environment would allow (support).

_ken :w

Well...........

Since we're "comparing" I'll have to get a measurement on mine, it's been quite a while. Y'all DO know it "takes two hands to handle a whopper" right?:eek I'd post a picture but, my lovely bride and all, oh hell, I'll match mine against anyone! I AM rather proud of "him";) Next time he's "relaxed" and close to the glass, my Pleco that is. :L

Damnitall Bullitt, see what you started!

:L The subject is (was) My Engine Project..., not My Plecostomus Punctatus... :L

What engine? :L

Was?

Tom, Ken's got an engine project going on?:L

Oh no!

You put in all that hard work, all that sweat, all that strain and all that time. You followed the directions, you knew what you were doing and yet the assembly just didn't come out right. In fact, what you ended up with was one big mess. Or did you? Perhaps what you expected and what you got are simply not anything alike for a very good reason. Maybe there's a design -- be it cosmic or subconscious, to all this. Rather than adjusting the product to fit your needs, why not adjust your needs to fit the product?

Does this mean the end for our hero? Stay tuned! Same BatTime, same BatChannel... :L

I was talking to a relative today and she said she saw the biggest dead one Saturday night by a river. That sucker wouldn't budge at all. :L No, she's a good girl! That catfish was pushing up daisies befor eshe got there. She said they had had considered eating it, since they caught nothing all day.

Too bad you didn't go with a big block, Ken. With all those "extra" parts you have, I could've made out like gangbusters. Oh well, I'm sure that everything will come around in the end. That's if I can get this thread back on the subject. ;)

You know, I was never like this in school. Work on the other hand, well that's another story. And we don't need that! :D

Hey Ken

My girlfriend's just asked for the weekly update on your engine project. What should I tell her?

Jane:SLAP Steve

Btw Thanks for interest shown in our Florida trip C.A.C. members, still getting our dates together on this.

Well, today I talked with a guy at Bothwell Automotive Electric here in Torrance. I'm going to take it in Monday so we can do a full scan to determine what we're going to have to do to get it functioning properly. Gil at Bothwell is leaning towards the idea that I'll have to switch to a speed density system, just as TPIS Terry suggested. This will also involve another Engine Control Unit if I want to do it right; the '87 computer is very limited. Of course this isn't smog legal either, but then neither is the rest of the car anymore. :L

Man, I wish I had more counsel when I started this project: now it sounds like the money spent on the upgraded MAF was wasted. :eyerole The gap between what was spent and what has been implemented is growing wider each day. I have a garage full of what I guess could be considered "NOS" aftermarket parts. :L

As long as the money lasts until the end, that's all that matters, right? ;)

_ken :w

Rent$ ,Food$ ,Car Parts$$$......it dont get no better then that :gap

Besides Ken , I'll probably need all that extra stuff by the time my project is done!! :L :L

Why is that not smop legal? in essence you will be upgrading to the NEWER Corvette electronics.. I never understood the California Smog Nazi laws anyway..

You should be able to recoupe the costs for some of the parts. if you decide to stay with the GM ECM they are always on ebay.. You also could go to a Haltech, Accel DFI, or a FAST Engine managemnet system, but if you convert to the Stock 90-92 F-body ECM you will save some money. Again the Fuel AVG, Instant MPG, and Range will no longer work.

with the Speed Density system you are no longer resticted by the Electronic side of the MAF...

What is not correct with the way it is running now? I still think you can possibly tune it with the MAF. but without seeing actual scan data I cannot say for sure.

There's an ad in the classifieds now, for the parts that will be sold, and a motorcycle too! ;)

Ken: Stopped by Jeffs yesterday to get a look see diagnosis on my car but the port in the car wasn't working so I have to check the wiring out. We did read the TPIS stage 6 chip I had and Jeff did burn a new chip for me based on his last MAF set up on his vette. The Craig Motes adapter I bought wouldn't fit in the ECM but the old Hyper Tech II I had had a removable chip so I am running this new chip now. The main changes are, "as I recall" and I suffer from CRS, "more total 6-8 degrees and quicker" timing advance plus a bit of a higher idle setting from 800 to 900 rpms. So far this chip has much more grunt when you put your foot in it but it's a bit flatter and has some surging at light throttle BUT it needs some learning time under it's belt. Ken in relooking over your string I don't really see a description of your drivability problems except that it runs bad when it warms up. You should consider contacting Jeff and having him burn you a chip to use for a while to see if it makes a difference. He is now running MAP and I have to say his vette pulls very hard. You probably also need to break down and get a diagnostic laptop program like I'm going to do for trouble shooting and tuning. You'd need a souped up chip to run your car while you send the chip back to TPIS anyway and if you do recomputer your car, you will really need it to tune. It seems to me the old carb cars were easier but when you are putting in very hot engine it's going to take some real sorting to get it where you want it.

Ken-
I'd urge you to listen to yourself and really do your homework before switching to the SD system. My '84, w/406 is getting REAL close to running test pipe legal, with a '90 Camaro ECM, etc. The performance is awesome!

I worked as a total novice, with Jim's Performance, in Virginia, to choose. The MAF has more snsors and more authority to vary the engine parameters, but the speed density system is simpler, with less sensors. There seems no advantage, from a performance point (evidenced also, partially, by GMs return to MAF after 2 years). I figued that once built, I'd leave this engine alone, having already gone to the 'nth' degree.

If I had it to do again, I'd have not: 1) started with a pre-'86 Vette, or 2) used a GM ECM, alone. I'd have opted for a two computer capable harness, with the GM unit running the dash and such, and a DFI from some other source. The flexibility of DFIs makes them inherently illegal for emissions. I believe, however, that a properly tuned engine runs clean. I also believe that most smog inspectors cannot detect a stock looking setup with a 'hidden' DFI.

CA smog laws don't allow much change of ANY parts, other than GoFast stickers (any CARB number stickers are supposed to be in place). Legal components have been through the expensive certification process. Most other parts will pass, as we all know, but haven't been throught the maze, due to cost recoup issues.

A real good chip person is very hard to find, and must be adhered to like glue. The 'Z' man, in Yorba Linda, did my initial based on a friends virtually identical engine. My car ran very rich, except at full throttle. Gary Leonhardt has recut my chip ($$$$), w/o a dyno, based on a 427 from another customer. Further tweaking has/will occur.

The dyno issue is tough, as the proper dyno, evidently, is rare, as most only allow full throttle programming, hence, other areas of the fuel tables are either untouched or educated guesses. The 'right' dyno allows full-drive-range, real-time programming, which is pricey, but time-efficient. Gary does not have access, but is the meticulous guy we Corvette freaks like touching our cars; knows what he's doing. That is expensive, too, though, with driving/adjusting/driving, etc..
Jim is a great resource for harnesses and such; is quite available, but not terribly helpful for specific chip tuning. A local guy is mandatory, as every engine is different. www.jimsperformance.com or his toll free #, listed there.

Good luck. The time spent in research and learning will pay off in dollars saved and the result you want.
