Key fob issue

I'm having a problem with one of my key fob remotes. It seems to keep forgetting what it is. I go to the car, press the unlock or lock buttons and nothing happens. So, I do the reset procedure (hold both lock/unlock for 7 seconds until the horn chirps) and then it wakes up and works fine. This lasts from one minute to a day. Then we lather/rinse/repeat.

I've replaced the battery in the fob with a new battery and that didn't seem to help any at all. Other ideas? The second remote seems to work just fine. But the wife does like having one that works too so I'm not into asking for that one from her. :bash

Remember:
one turn left=open DR door
two turns left= open pass door
three turns left= open deck lid

Sounds like the FOB has a loose connection internally - maybe a bad solder joint.
Take it apart and look. For circuit boards I use a jeweler's loupe to see detail. If it is a "cold" joint sometimes it can be seen.

I hadn't heard about the multi turn stuff. Just tried it and it worked.

As for the fob itself, I reckon that could be the case. But it would seem that it wouldn't work at all unless it just keeps getting close enough to work sometimes. Like I said, I did replace the battery, and since the battery is on the opposite side of the PC card, and only makes contact via those little pins, I did just clean them up a bit and stand them up a little straighter. Maybe it was just that they weren't making good contact anymore. I just reset it again and it is working again. We'll see how long it holds. Thanks for the tip.

Hi

When I got my 02 it only had one fob. Went to the local dealer and bought another one.
Programed it but it wouldn't work correctly. Brought it back to the dealer and talked to another person at the parts dept... The fobs are numbered 1, 2, and 3 on the back. You must have two different numbered fobs... first guy didn't know this and neither did I. Check the back of your fobs and make sure they are two different numbers

I just checked my fobs and they are all the same number. I have two working and another spare.
Where is the number? Are you sure he gave you the right frequency for the model car/year?

If you think about it, why would they number the fob's if it didn't make any difference. The wouldn't waste time numbering them if ther wasn't a difference. Mine are nubered 1 and 2.

Mine is a 2000 they obviously changed something. I thought that the change was in 2000 and carried on to 2004 but looks like 2002 is different.

Are you saying your fob's don't have a number stamped on the back?

I've got two fobs and neither one has a number stamped on it either. Process of elimination I found out which was one and two by using them to open the door and see it change the memory settings. So, the wife has two and I have one. Of course, mine is the one that quit working.

I ordered a new one from the web. Just waiting for it to come in. Of course, the day after I ordered one for $80 somebody on the board posted they would sell a pair of them for that price. His ad states that they have different part numbers for the two remotes, which is how the car knows which is which. Maybe some have a 1 or 2 and others have part numbers. I dunno. Just hope it works when it gets here. Otherwise, I'll be buying a pair of them.

yup. My numbers are all the same. However I dont have the automatic seats. Maybe that's it???

This is odd. You both have model year 2000. One has numbers on the back and the other does not. I have an 02 and have numbers on the back. I was told by the parts guy at my local dealership, I had to have two different numbers for them to work correctly. I think I'll give the parts dept. a call and see whats up....

Called two dealers got about the same answer. Some fob's are numbered some are not. All the number was for was to tell the two fob's apart. Your fob being number 1 your wifes fob number 2. You can set the seats and mirrors to preset positions when you unlock the vehicle. I was originally told the fob's had to be different numbers and that's not true.

Yep. New FOB arrived last night and it has the same part number as the other two. No other number stamped in the back. I reckon when you go through the process of learning the FOBs it "remembers" which one you set first as #1 and the second one as #2. The stamped number must just be for convenience like you said.

I've got a 2000, and I just checked my FOBs and there are no numbers on the back of either of mine. I disconnect the battery on the car when I leave Florida (I live in Massachusetts, but the car lives in Florida), and when I go back to Florida I connect the battery and re-program the FOBs by holding the lock and unlock buttons till the horn beeps. Haven't had any problems with either FOB in the 3 years that I've been doing this.
