L-98 water pump replacement

I broke the hose off of my coolant fill tank by my poorly placed elbow on one s.p.changing job. That's O.K.it was reasonably priced.

OBSERVATION:

Ya know, the parts for this car are really not that expensive(so far)
The only part that made me gasp(at this point)was the brake master cylinder.YIKES!$500.00 PLUS.

serpentine belt

just bought amn 89 coupe, belt seems climb off back of water pump pulley, are there more than one water pump and or pulley arrangement for this car?

ajs,

Welcome to CACC. No, there is only one belt. There should be a diagram of it on a sticker under the hood.

You may have a bad idler pulley that is torquing the felt off the pulleys.

Thanks, realize only one belt, was wondering if there was more than one water pump & more than one pulley option for this car.The belt seemed to ride up the back of the water pump pulley & angle towards the a/c pulley. I will check tensioner. Appreciate the help.

Hey,can ya think of anything else I should be checking on the Vette while I have it torn down to this stage?

You might want to check the harmonic balancer. I just had to replace mine. The rubber material between the center and outer ring breaks down with age. The outer ring slips (rotates) relative to the inner and the timing mark shifts. If you don't notice this (and its difficult to spot) the next time you set the base timing you'l be off and not know why the car isn't running right.
Eventually the rubber material degrades to the point where the balancer starts making niose as it scraps against your timng chain cover. OUCH.
This is apparently a common problem - dicussed much on other forums.
BTW - If you think the water pump was tough, wait til you try this R&R.
Good luck.

Yipee, it's my turn!

All the traditional C4 qwirks continue. My waterpump had a slow leak gradually getting worse. Now that it is off season it is time to repair. One Saturday afternoon's worth of work.

A special thanks to C4C5specialist for walking me through to get this far. There should be an official C4 L98 club just for the distinct problems they suffer.
