Latest project hiccups

I like the hi tech silver/aluminum coatings. They don't turn blue and discolor like chrome and would look good with the aluminum heads you have.

Bob,
I vote for cerama-chrome as well. It is incredibly durable and will not turn color like chrome or polished stainless will. The headers on my 59 project are ceramic-chrome, and look very much like the polished pipes.
Regards, John McGraw

Another vote for cerama-chrome! It's only money, 67!! :L

:)
I Vote For White....White would look nice against the black Valve covers and the red of the car. The Black color would be lost in the motor compartment.... and Chrome........well every body does crome...:D

I vote for coated headers, I went the cheap route (black) and I have to paint them every year this year they didnt last very long at all with all the rain weve had ;LOL

the chrome tend to discolor I have not heard of the coated ones turning.
Put me in line for a drive also :D

Buy plain ones (that fit), and after making whatever modifications are necessary to fit them properly, send them to Jet-Hot for ceramic coating; you don't want to buy a set that's already coated and then find out they need modifications. Been there, done that. :D

Good advice, John. I just spoke to Holley (Hooker) Tech Support and even their new side-mounts #2222HKR do not allow for the change to the ZZ-502 heads.

New or old..............it's grinding time again (sounds like a country song, no?) :D

#1: The Scoggins-Dickey clutch pivot support for the 502 does not fit when using a Lakewood scattershield.

The scattershield and block plate are wider than the stock aluminum bellhousing. How to fix it? Out comes the dremel to remove about a 3/16" of metal from the scattershield and block plate along a 4" - 5" plane where the right edge (in this photo) of the support approaches the scattershield. :eyerole Otherwise, I can't get the bolts through the support into the scattershield. The bolt holes are not visible in this photo.
Here's how the pivot support would look installed.

And, between the two red marks is where metal must be removed from both the block plate and the scattershield. The piece that can be seen below is the Lakewood block plate which rides between the block and the scattershield (which is black and sits behind the block plate).

Its easey to figure out.

1-any thing painted will need to be re painted in a year or so of use.

2-Allthought the chrome looks great they blue out quickly where they attach to the heads.

So the ceramic coated are the way to go. I hope 66450427 (I think) jumps in on this thread I know he did alot of research on headers for his car build up

I have the ceramic coated Hookers and would highly suggest them to anyone... you can even clean them with a dirty rag. That just was not one of 67's original choices whan the thread wa started. :)

I have seen lots of folks with chrome and no problems. Maybe the expensive ones are better than the cheaper ones? :SLAP

Actually, 1Bad69 clued me in to a place here in Ontario that does ceramic coating. Finding out that even new Hookers must be modified in the lower flange area to fit my ZZ-502 means I won't be ordering chrome.

Mike, I'll probably visit the guys in Shelburne. Thanks.

Fishman,

What colour are yours? Got any photos?
It would be hard to get a good pic now that they are installed, but I would call it a 'shiny/flat silver'... kinda hard to describe. Nice color, not as shiny as chrome, but not dull either. My engine compartment is mainly black... black... black and some chrome. The color I have goes well with both the black and chrome in the compartment. At least I have been told it looks good. :L

I thought 'ceramic coated' was like the Henry Ford thing... "any color you want, as long as it's black". Can you get it done in any color, or at least a small variety of colors?

Boy, pretty hard to type after a few of these Brandys.

I ran into clearance issues with GMPP aluminum head bolts too. ARP make a shorter lower head bolt/washer. It's a 12 point. Just switched my lower's out. The Stock bolts wouldn't work with Hooker Super Comps or stock manifolds. Should work with your heads and will save some grinding time. :upthumbs

Len,

That's interesting news. I assume they're the same length.....4" I think for the lowers. Got a part number?

De car be looking good!!!:D
I am so jacked off at Hooker after the fit of the headers on the S-10 that I would like to powder coat ´em n put ´em where de sun don’t shine. Sorry to rant on in your thread but after 56 years of believing that Hooker = the best header I am really unhappy with having to ¨cut and paste¨ an expensive set of headers.:mad
