LT1-oil

Hello!
I live in Croatia and I can't find (mobil 1, 5-30w). What is the best oil I can use instead?

Castrol, Quaker State, Esso, Pennzoil, Valvoline, Amsoil, Royal Purple these are just a few companys that make good synthetics.

If your going Synthetic just about anyone is a good choice really, they all have to meet the same regulatory conditions.

Different oil's have different advantages and features though so simply read the back of the bottle and see if it meets your requirements.

Something new I saw once, on Esso Syntethic (The grey bottle) they have a stamp right on the back that says "Corvette Engine". I don't know what that means because all we have is 350's generally unless they are talking about ZR1.

I personally have had great success with Castrol Syntec in all my cars and I continue to run it.

Good Hunting.

Thank you! Do you think that the number 5-30w is very important or I can use for example 10-30 w?

You should use what is specified on the oil cap and owner's manual for your car.

oils

i believe the recommened is 10w-30, however i would highly recommend only synthetic, (well true synthetic that is), Only 2 that i am aware of. Amsoil, and Royal purple.

Castroil, Mobil1( actually a better choice for the hydro cracked types), is the better on the semi synthetics ( not true synthetic oils, even though they price them that way).

While the hydro cracked types work very well, Amsoil and Royal Purple are very expensive, and are superiour in all catagories, AND will last well over 10,000-12,000 miles between changes ( amsoil claims longer... much longer), when you factor in the cost of the oils, versus change intervals, The true synthetics are far cheaper.

and BTW the oil change intervals in the US are much lower than elsewhere ( for the same oils ).

The first number refers to it's WINTER weight/viscosity hence 10w-30

I run 10x30 in the summer and 5w30 in the cooler months..

How do you mean Larry that Royal and Amsoil are the only TRUE syntethics? Are you telling me there is false advertising?

Because Castrol for instance DOES have three different makes of oil, Standard GTX-SynBlend (Half and Half)-Then Syntec which is a full synthetic says that right on the bottle?!

Are you thinking they arent because of color? Where are you getting your information from?

well, advertising laws allow them (ie castrol etc) to label them as synthetic, when in actuality they are not 100% synthetic as much as 30% of the base stock is produced through standard refinery processes from Crude oil base stock, as opposed to PAO's (synthetic)

a better explanation can be found at

www.performanceoiltechnology.com/castrolmobilandpao.htm

or

www.royalpurple.com

and i stand corrected in my earlier statement, there are 3 true synthetics, Amsoil, Royal purple, and Mobil 1 Tri synthetic

and i would rate them in exactly that order

and nope, color means nothing... after all RP is ....purple, but Mobil 1 looks... well like oil :)
color is mearly added by the refinerery to define differant types, Ie Gas and oils etc. they all have a dye of some sort in them... well ammoco clear didnt...

I think you were correct the first time. Tri-Syn has been pulled and there was a debate over whether that was pure synthetic. As far as I'm concerned it wasn't. The new Super-Syn is pure so I'll stay with Mobil 1. Yor're right on with the misleading labeling. At over $4.50 a quart I think the public deserves pure not a blend.

Not quite right !!

Guys, guys,
Let's not confuse it more here.
Mobil 1 has always and is fully 100% synthetic ! Just like Royal Purple and Amsoil. Castrol was the company that went to hydrocracked and Mobil actually sued them. That is the article on the Amsoil site. For more info read also www.motor-oil-bible.com
Tri-Synthetic just meant that they use the three fully synthetic base stocks that are on the market and that is improtant fo accurate seal and gasket conditioning. PAOs alone would shrink the gaskets and oil leaks would occur. A common problem with early synthetics.
Read up !

Alright I'll bite, but Castrol is still a good oil. Ive never had to plug in my car in winter because of it BUT

I agree if its not all there why am I paying for it..

I for one am not a fan of Amsoil simply because of its company size and availabilty here.. Its ALMOST backyard this stuff however Ive never heard any complaints from Mobil 1 (This is after a year in the oil/lube business)

So next change I swish the motor and go to Mobil 1. Simply because of availabilty and the size of the company backing their claims.

Good Article Thanks!

BTW good call ALL oil after refining is clear ;) Its the additives that make it the color it is (Hence Mobil and Quaker State being almost transparent)

as to mobil 1 , agreed, hence my second post correcting my first statement, Mobil 1 is 100% synthetic.... HOWEVER... it was not always, and you are right, they ( mobil ) are the ones that sued over the 100% synthetic issue.
Kind of like the old advertising arguments with Mayo... real versus genuine. They dont necessarily mean what the rest of the world thinks they mean( at least in advertising).

I myself use the mobil1 ( only because i did not wish to wait on the Amsoil) However i will change over soon.

The Tri Syn blends is older technology ( doesnt mean there is anything wrong with it ), But having an older engine, i just want the best protection i can get .

Anyways i still stand on my orig. statement
1. Amsoil ( best)
2. Royal Purple ( better )
3. Mobil 1 Tri-Syn ( very good )
... and there may be more 100% syn's that i have not heard of.

then any quality partial blend after that.

Then for new engine break in... standard Crude based.

So Drazen... have we confused you suffeciently yet??? ;)

and my Fubar... mobil1 tri-syn( as i called it) is actually the super syn or what ever they call it now.

Gotta disagree Alex. Lord knows I don't need any more oil debates:( Fact is Mobil had Tri-syn listed as a blend at one time under their own homepage. Don't get me wrong there are always two sides but Tri-Syn is gone and Super Syn is in so all is well.:w

Still not right ....

Read again !! Mobil has always:
a. stated on their web site that their Mobil 1 is 100% and fully synthetic
b. Said TriSyn is a blend out of three fully synthetic base stocks, not hydrocracked dino oil. PAOs are partone, esters are part two and I don't remember the third part. Redline i.e. is only made from esters. Amsoil, I believe only from PAOs. If you read the motor-oil-bible you will find information on the three fully synthetic base stocks and why a blend is important to correctly condition motor seals
c. Sued Castrol as the only plaintiff against their misrepresentation

not wishing to drag this out as The original post was simply to point the originator to a good reliable source of Oil info ( and not over pay for a low quality oil touted as synthetic).

A. Not real sure what they ( mobil ) say on their web site... But Mobil 1 was not always 100% synthetic, and in fact at one point many years ago it was highly recommended you not even mix their oil with standard dino oil ( bad things happened, Bro in law worked for Mobil for more than a few years, retired now). And helped my dad ( actually step dad) recover damages from Mobil when the oil? (mobil 1) damaged his engine after adding a qt of Dino oil to bring the level back up. There statements where that as this oil (M1) was based on Petrol base stock, it could not have been their oil that caused the failure. ( BTW Mobil Lost that one ), Now granted this is back more than a few years ( 15+yrs ).
They have gotten better, and today have one of the better oils.( hence #3 on my list)

B. is correct ( have not heard any thing on redline good or bad )

C. again correct, however not sure what the outcome is/was as i believe castrol still touts their oil as synthetic ( and it aint, at least true 100% synthetic )

sad part was at the time Castrol was better than Mobil 1 ( in wear tests ) But that aint the whole ball o wax as they say ( pun intended) Heck if all your after is simple friction reduction then use soap... it just will not last real long in the engine, and that is the real endline of what is desired by us.

Quality engine protection
Quality Lubrication properties
at a quality price.
Some people swear by dino, and that is fine, change it every 6000+ miles, heck if ya just change the filter every month even Dino oil will work very very well. But if i pay for Synthetic, I expect all the benifits of synthetic and am willing to pay the price for it. ( and not get hoodwinked by the sellers of the oil on syntax).

and yes i meant 6000 mile oil change intervals, 3000 miles is simple BS started by the oil co's here in the US.

My info BTW also comes complments of the U.S. Army ( trained as a POL specialist ) and the oil we used contained detergents ( no longer available (except in Synthetics ) , as it keeps the engines too clean), and Change intervals at twice what is told to civialians, heck the same oil we use here is sold in europe with Oil change intervals at twice ours now.

Any ways, the answer to Drazen: Use any oil as a temp. oil 10w-30, Then Order in a supply of AMSOIL 6 qts should be enough, get a quality filter, and your done for the next year or so.

I guess we have it settled now..................and people from Croatia will never againa sk a simple question about motor oil........hahahahahahaha

:L :L :L

Yeh! Keep it simple like Soccer questions.:w
