My 88 blew a head gasket. Since everything is coming off the top, I went to a local company (Exotic Muscle-Tempe, AZ) and ordered some equipment.

I am getting an Accell Super Ram Intake ($445.95) Accell Long-Tube Runners (359.95) a ported plenum, 24 lb. injectors (don't know the brand)at $295.95 and Crane Gold (Roller) Rocker arms at $335.95.

I have looked in C-4 Mods and saw one comment about not using Accell LT Runners because they are cast and don't work as well as extruded runners. Is the difference significant? Exotic Muscle is going to (I hope this is right) make sure the runners are properly ported to match the plenum???

I have a 52mm throttle body, adj. fuel pressure, K&N, Flowmasters, "Vortex" plate (behind the throttle body)

I also wonder if I need an MSD 6AL ignitiion set-up with this new set-up or stock will work.

I should have done some checking around, but when my mechanic said the heads had to come off (first time at 144,000 miles) I thought this was the time to move up.

Thanks,

Mike

Boy are you gonna be upset...

You need to do more then just that....add a cam, and get the heads opened up with larger valves then add a decent exhaust....or you are wasting money. The deal is to let the engine breath...in and out. Just opening the intake is like adding the coffee can exhaust to a ricer...it does no good at all...and in most cases it actually degrades performance.

Read Kens post on how to build an engine and you will understand the whole concept.

What you are buying is a great start....but wait until you have the complete package to get the most out of the engine. I have gone through this and made the mistakes.

Hi Eagle.

I appreciate your comments. I actually do have a pretty good exhaust system. I think I mentioned in my thread that I have a set of stainless Flowmasters, a free-flow cat, and a "Y" pipe without the pre-cats. It has been on a couple of years nad not only sounds great but instantly helped performance.

I didn't mention that I am going to get a set of headers in about three weeks when they are available. I think they are $595 and they are powdercoated and a newer design. They aren't Hooker but I don't know who makes them.

As for the cam, I'm not sure just what that would be that important now. Can you let me know why?

Thanks very much for your interest and feedback.

By the way. What do you think of the selections thus far?

Mike

Eagle is being kind; you are going to be more than upset.

Try running a mile with your mouth taped shut and your nose stuffed full of cotton, your asking the Vette to do this as long as you have the stock heads and cam.:duh

1. Throw away the Vortex plate, its adding to the ¨breathing¨ problem.
2. Get the heads reworked or exchange them for a ¨prepared set¨. To get the expected performance out of the SuperRam you really need bigger valves and a smaller combustion chamber.
3. Port and polish every thing from the air cleaner to the exhaust tips.
4. Get a cam shaft to match the intake, exhaust and heads. All of the above is not going to help with out the right cam.

What about the Bottom end and rings? With 144000 are they going to be up to the job? I have seen lots of $15. conrod bearings let go and send a piston through an $800. head.

BTW I am getting well over 300HP out of an L98 with more or less this same setup.:Steer

Thanks very much. In reading other, older posts on the whole subject it is pretty clear that I got the cart before the horse.

Thanks again,

Mike

Id get rid of that Vortex plate.

I commented in your other thread first, youre really going to need a few things.

If you WANT to run a stock-looking intake, go with the larger runners and plenum and make sure everything is ported and port-matched to the manifold and heads.

Then id try something like a Lingenfelter (LPE) 211 cam or a TPiS ZZ9. Or you can try something with similar specs to these.

Get the stock heads ported, AFRs are unnecessary with a stock looking intake.

Then you MUST get some headers, the stock manifolds are killing the motor. A set of 1.75" or 1 5/8" longtubes is necessary, and youll get about 15hp, maybe more after this stuff is done.

I would try to do rings and preferably bearings, if you have the money.

The MSD may not be totally necessary with the stock-looking intake because it wont be able to pull to the high rpms where the stock HEI system falls off, but it wont hurt you.

What are "AFR's"

Thanks for your help! Can you tell me what the AFR stands for?

Mike
