Mobile 1 Oil filter

I have used Mobile 1 oil filters on my c5 for the last three oil changes, my question, do you really need to change the filter as you change the oil every 3-4 thousand miles.

Yes........cheap insurance for your engine:w :w :w

i change the filter every 4000 miles and change the mobil 1 once a year in all cars and trucks. sometime i go 12,000 on the oil in my truck and with 100,000+ plus miles it uses no mobil 1 and the engine is clean inside and as quite as it was new. changing the filter is more important than changing the oil because if the filter get too dirty the oil will bypass the filter.

The question is do you need to change the oil with every filter change? NO.

Like motorman, I change the filter every 3-4K but the oil stays in for 9-12K.

Mobil 1 will last a good long time but I don't take any chances with the filter. If the filter ever gets full of crud, it will start bypassing that nasty stuff to the engine. Not good, so I change the filter regularly and the oil every 3rd filter.

Used oil analysis and OCI's

I think that to accurately determine the correct oil change interval, a used oil analysis is needed. The condition of the oil can change based on many things. Some of the major reasons are:

1. Oil change interval
2. Season
3. Type of driving (highway, city)
4. Oil weight and brand

All of these affect the usable life of the oil and will either shorten or lengthen your OCI. Try a UOA on your next oil change and see how it turns out. You'll probably be suprised either way.

Two products that help extend OCI's- Lube Control and Fuel Power from Lube Control Distributors(www.lubecontrol.com). I use both.

Here's a link to my first UOA on my Z06. I use Royal Purple Racing 21 oil and AC Delco UPF44 filters - http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=001260#000000

I use Mobil One oil filters but, but reguardless on which oil filter you use if you don"t change it, why would you want clean oil going thru a dirty filter !! Just my $.02 worth............:beer

I must be missing something here - why would one change the filter but not the oil (or, the oil but not the filter, for that matter)? As far as when to change the oil, doing an oil analysis could validate the decision as to when to change the oil. However, I wonder if you will get any better results (e.g. reduced negative content in the oil analysis) if the oil is changed at 3-4K miles as opposed to 25% remaining oil life (or one year elapsed time from last oil change) per the DIC.

with late model corvette engines that use fuel injection and kept in proper tune will not dilute the oil with gasoline as carb engines would. oils like mobil 1 can be run for many thousands of miles because the oil does not wear out. just change the filer every 3/4000 miles and you can run the oil 20,000. my C-5 with the "oil minder" would show 60% of the oil life remaining at 4000 miles when i would change the filter. i use mobil 1 in all my cars and trucks, change oil one a year and the truck has 100,000+ miles, uses no oil and the engine clean inside and as quite as when new.

most racing oil use a high level on hi pressure additives and this cause oxidation of the oil faster than oil designed for the street.

:w I always change the Oil and Filter at the same time. Seems like the right thing to do.:)

That is true of the Redline racing oils, but not the Royal Purple racing oils. This was a concern for me initially so I asked RP. They said it is more than fine to run their racing oils on the street. Redline did NOT recommend their racing oils for the street.

I'm about to do my second UOA on RP Racing 21. I can't wait to see how it comes out.

Cavettefan, Changing the filter and then topping off the crankcase serves to extend OCI's by replacing the part that wears the fastest. The oil filter becomes inefficient way before the oil breaks down. Changing the filter every 3,000 miles and topping off with allow for extended OCI's and is fine if you just daily drive your car. I drive mine pretty hard and participate in 4-5 HSDE's a year, so I like to change the oil after events.

What if you have a low mileage corvette that say you put on 2000 miles per year, which is about right for my 98 which I just bought with 13,000. So I change the filter every 2 years and the oil every 6 years if I drive it the same rate as the prior owner? It just does not sound right to me. I would like to hear more from people more familiar with Mobil 1. Thanks. Dave

I would never go six years without and oil change. If you drive your car infrequently, you will sitll have to change the oil on a regular schedule. You can get extended OCI's by changing the filter and topping off, but should change the oil at least once a year.

I would have to agree with thetorch. If you do not put many miles on your car, the oil and filter should be changed once a year. Perhaps c4c5specialist would care to commment on the merits of extending the oil change interval. The rule of thumb that I follow with my personal car is that if oil life remaining gets to 25% on the DIC, the oil and filter get changed. If one year passes before the oil life remaining gets to 25%, then the oil and filter gets changed regardless.

I am sure there are people in the CAC community that believe (and may even have the oil test data to back up their position) that longer change intervals are justified; and they are right - the longer interval is justified for them. I tend to prefer to over-maintain my car in the hope of extending the useful life of the car. Time will tell if my efforts are fruitful.

read the owner manual GM supplies with your corvette,it explains the oil change frequency required even using the oil minder system install in every newer corvette.

I never understood it when people would change the filter and not the oil. You can get a 5 qt. synthetic Mobil 1 at Wal Mart for $20. How much do you really save? Maybe $40 a year? To me, that isn't worth it. :eyerole

if you change before the oil minder says to it is a waste of natural resources. since GM has to warranty the engines i am sure they are not reccommending any thing that would cost them extra money.

Edmond, as you note, one is saving maybe $40 bucks a year. Against a potential exposure if the engine gets toasted of, say $3,000, that sounds like a great savings model. At the $40/year savings, that would require something like 75 years ($3,000/$40) of savings to offset the exposure.

And like motorman said, GM won't uphold that warranty if something went wrong. No one said that supporting a Vette' would be cheap. :L
