Motor Problem- Rings and/ or Valve

Advice from an old engine builder

Hi
I'm new to this site and have only worked on other peoples vettes. I have rebuilt and or built from scratch with new blocks so many small block chevy motors I should be in competion with GM. I have a really good piece of advice for you, if you are going to do the wrenching pull the motor find a good machine shop accept their advice and everything will turn out OK if you are going to hire it done pull the motor and call one of the GM dealers that sell performance crate motors and just enjoy the warranty. I have been into street rods for a long time and now am bidding on a 1973 T top Sure hope I get it I have always wanted a Vett...

personally, I'd get that cyl up to TDC, pull the plug, fill it up with air, and see where the leak is. air out the carb, bad intake valve, air out the exhaust bad exhaust valve, air into the crank case, bad rings, etc. No air sound at all, good cyl. at least then you have an idea of what the problem was. takes about 5 minutes and it's free.

I did a compressed air check and determined that it had a bad intake valve on #3. There might be other valve problems as well.... When I go down a hill you hear the popping associated with bad valves/valve guide. Also, after high rpm on the freeway, decelerating causes the dreaded blue cloud for the next motorist. Even though the motor starts right up everytime and runs smooth, I suspect bad rings as well ......

I'm going to put another motor in the Vette this winter. Two options, as I see it.

I'll either get a GM crate motor or have AmericanSpeed build and dyno a motor using a date correct block (my block is out of a '73)

Has anyone out there used AmericanSpeed...they advertise in Corvette Fever????
