My Corvette Cave (Lots of Pics!)

Yeah - I'm such a geek. I made a scale drawing of the garage, outlined the car, and then planned where things like the workbench, tool box, storage cabinet, fridge, Corvette furniture, and other things would go. I then made some rough templates, took 'em out to the garage, and tried to visualize what everything would look like.

We're trying to finish things up. I have two more items on order, and a couple of things to buy, and then I'll be ready to start hanging Corvette art.

I'm hoping to complete the project by the end of summer, but there's no guarantee!

Steven

I wouldn't say you're "geeky", I 'd say you're a lot like me (and I'm not geeky :D). I did the same thing when I built my "man cave" (my woodworking shop), except I used my CAD program and scaled everything out (even some tools/machines I didn't have yet, but planned on getting) an then moved things around to make it all fit. Pictures of my "man cave".

Keep up the good work and post new pictures as you progress.

OldCorvetteFan , have you given any thought to flooring ? Or you going with cement only ? I flip flop on putting down the epoxy paint in mine.
However, I have had many lubricant spills over the years.

One oil spill and its hard to get things to stick to the cement I've heard.

I love your workshop! If I had the money and the space, I'd build another building for carpentry work. My woodworking skills are similar to my drywalling skills, but I'm an enthusiastic amateur carpenter (I kind of have to be - our house was built in 1880, and I try to stay ahead of it!).

I knew from the beginning that pure white walls would just NOT do!
It looked really cool, and the lights really lit up the joint, too! But it just needed something ...

So, since I really liked the idea of a contrasting color on the bottom of the walls, I thought I'd do something in a medium gray ...

Like a good painter, I taped off the dividing line with a continuous piece of tape from the garage door to the side door. Before I taped, I cut a stud for a fixture, and made guidelines along the wall. Then I started taping, stretching it about an arms length wide, matching up the lines, and pressing in.

080615-03.jpg

With that done, I got my son out, gave him the roller, and told him to get to it. This is the 'James Wall'. I put the paper on the upper wall so he'd have a margin of safety.

080617-05.jpg

While he was working that wall, I cut in the rest ...

The wife came out and gave me a break.

080617-07.jpg

I really like how the gray looks!

Now, for the next step!

With the walls done, it was time to get the floor done. After way too much time agonizing over what to use, we decided that the Rustoleum Epoxy seemed like a reasonable approach, and we got started.

First step was the etching ...

After a couple of good rinses, and a day to let everything dry, my wife (Dreamboat Annie) did the cut in while I was at work ...

080623-02.jpg

080623-03.jpg

Then we put two coats of light gray epoxy down ...

Then work stopped while we attended Bloomington Gold.

From that point, we've been working on adding details, such as a nice stripe between the gray and the white ...

and baseboard ...

I installed the door frame molding next.

What's left? I'll be painting the door (along with the bare wood on the door frame), and we've got striping tape on order (contrasting red pinstripes above and below the checkerboard).

We also ordered our Corvette Cave Beverage Storage Device, which should be here by July 14, so I'll be able to have cold ones available to enjoy in the garage (I just LOVE my wife - that was another of her great ideas!).

I haven't done much lately - my sister in law is here, and we've been kinda busy (and I'm waiting for that pinstriping to get here!!!)

Steven

Dang that looks really good.

:upthumbs

The pinstriping arrived! Annie and her sister have agreed to install it while I'm gone tomorrow!!!! :thumb

The fridge should be here Monday!!!

I got the door frame trim painted as well as the door. I'm not real happy with the way the door turned out, so I may yank it back off one of these days and repaint it.

Steven

Door frame taped and ready for painting ...

The tape didn't get installed today, so I'm hoping Annie and her sister get to it before the weekend is out - then I'll start putting 'stuff' in it!

Steven

While I was at work today, Annie put up the pinstriping, and our first piece of 'furniture' for the garage ...

The refrigerator is supposed to be delivered this week. I'm also hoping that we can pick up the new workbench and storage cabinet this week, and start moving the tools/toolbox from the house to the garage.
Steven

It looks better with every photo you post, Steven! :thumb

I've got a question for you... what paint did you use on the door? That mirror like finish looks great!! (Love the RED too, by the way. :) )

:wJane Ann

I agree with Jane Ann, it looks better with every picture. I want to know about the checker board border, did you paint that on or is it a wallpaper type material. And if you painted it on how did you do it? Love the table.

Thanks Jane Ann & Tom -

I used Rustoleum high gloss oil paint on the door (I think the color is Regal Red).

I bought the checkerboard racer's tape from Amazon ...

http://www.amazon.com/ISC-Checkerbo..._2?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1216144575&sr=8-2

And the pinstripe from Stewart Design ...

http://www.stewartdesign.biz/solid-pinstripe-p-1268.html?osCsid=af25c320be310f438c5c8487bbf105a9

I bought the Dark Red (code 078), and it matches the door color pretty good.

The table came from Zip last year, but I think it was a clearance item, and I haven't seen any more of them. I'd like to get a C4 bar stool, but those are hard to find (especially if you want a stool with a back on it!).

Refrigerator is supposed to be out for delivery, according to Annie, so I should have it done and the stereo installed tonight!

Steven

I have the refrigerator, stereo, workbench, and storage cabinet in the garage. I'll be moving my tool box down next, and then hanging the artwork. It's looking like I dreamed it would!

It really has come together. You can be very proud of the way it has turned out.
