My overdrive works fine up to a point...

There are two electrical connections, one is a black plug in the front and the other a gray 2-wire male plug at the very back of the OD unit above the linkage. When the transmission heats up this gray plug looses contact and the unit shifts out of OD. The light on the dash remains lit and will go off and on when you push the button in the shift knob, but the unit will not go back into OD. It does not fit well, it's shot. I am the original owner of this car so I know that no one has messed with anything on it.

Does anyone know where I could find one of these gray 2-wire male plugs? GM does not offer them anymore, unless you want to buy a full electrical harness that is.

Thanks!

Thanks, looks like there is one just up the road a piece..

You can also go to PepBoys or a local parts store, and make your own waterpack connectors.

Motormite also makes connectors and parts to make the connectors

This was mine

That's the one! One question, the two pins are exposed aren't they, not fully shielded like most of the plugs. Just what exactly does this plug control, do you know?

Its the backup light conector...The two pins are surrounded by the plastic...it slides into the BU switch and makes a connection...that conector in the above picture is broke...unlike this new one

Then there must be something else wrong with my OD unit, unless this faulty plug is the cause of it going in and out of OD. Are the tips of this keyed in any way, by chance?

It will only go into the switch one way...Your 87 has the OD switch on the shifter (mine is on the counsel) These are noted for failing...You should take it apart and put in a new switch...I can give you a link for an inexpencive switch...also make sure you change the filter and fluid in the OD...these things MUST be kept clean.

Thanks for all your help, I'll get right on it tomorrow. With the execption of this overdrive bug this car is almost mint. 51K actual miles, never wreaked.

You may want to checkout your overdrive relay. It is located near the firewall just inboard of the brake booster. There will be two identical looking relays. One is the fuel pump relay. Disconnect one and turn your key to on. If you hear the fuel pump energize then you got the right one. The insulation on the wires of these relays are prone to shrinking over time exposing the wires. All sorts of funky stuff can happen.

The relays are cheap too, so if you just want to toss a few bucks at the car the hell of it you can do that too.
