Well, got new tires in May, set-up alignment as per "forum" comments, so far, after 3 lapping days and 5 autocrosss events tires are wearing evenly, albeit quickly. (Got the RE50's) Inspection this week revealed that I need new pads in front, yikes CDN dealer quoted $836.50 for front pads, and $654.16 for 2 rotors. Well here's a call out for what to replace them with. I am prepared to change out the front pads prior to track days, so am, looking for a track pad that will be kind to the rotors. Am discovering that there appesar to be many hidden costs to track days. So far am not discouraged. There is a slight lip at the edge of the rotors, was wondering if they need to be replaced, machined at the edge, or just have the new pads installed? Is it unreasonable to expect rotors to last for 2 set's of pads?

Wow, Bendix has ceramic for $60 and claim 4% better stopping power, what am I missing here over the ACDelco at $292?

Yes, most of the time you can wear out two sets of shoes to one set of rotors, most of the time.:eyerole

The best ACDelco rotors go for less than $300 a set. Personally I like the Power Slot but they are not yet avaialble for the '08 Z06.

Hi there,

MOST EVERY aftermarket pad does NOT INCLUDE PAD RETAINMENT PINS>

These pins are the additional cost that are seen in the ACDelcos.

And yes, the pins are critical to correct pad movement and function and SHOULD BE REPLACED when the pads are replaced.

Pad retainment pins. . .

Those pins jack the price about five times more than after market shoes?? What is so special about them? If they're only included in GM pads what are people using who purchase after market pads? Or are they somehow getting along without them? :confused

HI there,

This is where the debate will rage as to what you are paying for when you purchase brake pads.

If you look in the GM catalog, there is the OEM which is 171-0946 from ACDelco, yet there is another option from Acdelco that is NOT as good a pad.

Pad friction formulation from GM has to do everything well. Cold, hot, wet, dry or anything else.

Other pad manufacturers do not put the effort into brake friction testing.

Having installed everything from Hawk to Bendix to OEM to ACDelco, a racing pad is different from a street pad and these differences need to be understood.

And certainly not everyone realizes that the pad guide pins take a beating too and must be changed.

Part number from dealer is GM19153019, would you know if this is the "better" pad kit you mentioned. Assume they call it a kit because the pins are included. If you could confirm would appreciate it. Plan to go with OEM for street use, and another set for the track. Saw on the forum that a few owners have tried Cobalt pads without negatives, apart from noise. Not an issue for track use.

ACDELCO Part # 1710959 {GM #19153019} PAD KIT,FRT DISC BRK 2 DOORS; w/HVY DUTY ANTILOCK BRAKES(J56) $292

RAYBESTOS Part # ATD1185M Advanced Technology Front; Semi-Metallic; Z06; Originally Equipped With Semi-Metallic; Contains Hardware $201

You be the judge......

I've been running Porterfield R-4 race pads on my C-5 Z06 and these have been very rotor friendly. I've only thrown away 2 sets of rotors in 6 years. We typically do 3-4 track weekends with 2 drivers. Andy Porterfield does make pads for the C-6 Z06, he owns one too.

The down side on the street is they will squeak at low pedal pressure and and low speed. They also dust.:confused

I replaced the stock Z06 pads with EBC reds. They are plenty good for street and autoX, but not track days.

I've heard good things regarding Porterfield's product for the Z, but have yet to try them myself. HAWK padlets seem to have good initial bite when cold.

I like the Mintex Xtreme Motorsport compound. It was actually tested on the Z06 during development, but lost out due to a higher cost than the Ferodo's that got selected by PBR. The early Ferodo's were delaminating, which they eventually sorted out. The MXM's are made in the USA by Mintex's Racing division and handle daily driving chores very well. They are aslo good for light track days (up to 1350°F rotor temps anyway).
