Okay, I am the 3rd owner of an 86 in great shape with a couple of little quirks, until tonight when I hit the limit.

The car has 88 wheels on it, the first owner had them put on or maybe he did himself, using spacers with long studs.

So here is the issue.

It is really hard to get the wheels to sit dead center in the hub thus causing vibration at high speed.

So I went looking for the proper wheel adapters, found them from another member here, (Thanks Roy) I then picked up new studs and lugs tonight.

Here goes the doozy, lifted the car removed the wheels, remove the caliper.

The F$#@*& jerk welded the studs in place, my god was I Pi$$ed. Now it looks like I need new front bearings. ARRRRRRRRRGGGG

Thanks for listening guys.
My wife is asleep and does'nt really care anyway, she does'nt get the vette attraction thing.

man Mart sorry to hear that! what an IDIOT! :duh

Oh no you have met the famous Bubba. Bubba does a lot of work on Vetts. I hate Bubba. If I ever meet him or her I think maybe broken thumbs are in order. You are in good company Bubba usually works on all Vettes at one time or another. As they get older the odds that Bubba has worked on them get better. A good frame off gets rid of all Bubba's handy work unless you happen to be Bubba.

This one is for Bubba:r :bash :grinshot :hb :blow

Whoa, I'm no bubba, man I'm all for keepin my baby purrrfect.

Nothing but the best, she may only be a lowly early C4 coupe, but she's all mine and I have done nothing but clean her up and treat her right.

My car, too, has met Bubba. He's the guy who welded the rear parking brake line to the brake activator lever... on BOTH sides... so you couldn't get the cable off and couldn't re-use the levers even if you cut the cable.

Well here goes, first thing in the AM I am picking up front hubs for $270 EA. CA and thats a good price up in the North.

Ouuuuch. Oh well I thing the car still has the originals with 135,000 miles, I guess it's time. It take a bite out of my ball joint and bushing upgrade this winter.

Oh well, it's my Vette.

Welded wheel studs......why am I hearing banjo music? I guess it happens. Sometimes I wonder.

That could have been part of your vibration problem. The studs were most likely too small.

Getting rid of the studs and with the new bearings, it may feel like a whole new front end was installed.

Mart,

Sorry to hear you've been Bubba'd, but sometimes undoing what Bubba did can be very satisfying.:beer

Steve :w

Yeah, it is very satisfying, but sometimes it just seems that I'm working on a big snowball..... Cool.

Hmmm after saying that, I gotta hit the parts store.

Thanks Guys, this site is the best.

Ahhhhhh, I just finished the front bearings, after a very frustrating run in with a bad bearing, the ABS sensor ring was not fully installed on one new bearing, thus not allowing the hub to turn freely, took a while to figure out what the problem was.

Anyway, took it out for a test drive and WOW, it's like a whole new car, and the old bearings once off did not really feel that bad, but old + the welded in studs and plain old spacers really made for a horrible ride.

It's fantastic, smooth - at least for a Z51 it is.

Oh well I'm happy, my world is in harmony again.

Thanks for listening guys:beer

Do you feel better now?
But really never heard of this.
Is it something odd?
thanks
tony

Not sure what you are refering Tony, but the ABS started on the 86's I think, so yours will not have the sensor ring on the back of the hub.

before you get thru it will have been a snow man not a snow ball. did you meet buba at the time of sale?

No I did not meet Bubba then, but finding out that the studs were welded into the hubs would have been a tricky one.

And the car was a really good deal, so I figured even if I had to throw a couple of G's at it, it was still a great deal.

And know I have the comfort of knowing they are perfect.

I wonder if this "Bubba" fella is related to Mr Cobb?

No, not Ty, the other Cobb; the one with the last name Job.

I've run into some of Cobb's work over the years myself. This Bubba character must be a new kid on the block, or is he just associated with Corvettes?
