went out to the garage yesterday morning & turned the key on my 93 lt1 & nothing--did have lights & horn however--tried it later & it started right up 3 or 4 times--then nothing--took the battery to have it checked--was told it was too weak to check--would have to be charged first--since it was pretty old,i just bought a new one--put it in the car--nothing--went out this morning & it started right up--anyone had this problem? could be the starter? something electronic? should i drive it to a shop if it starts again? could it just stop on me while driving? I know it won't if it is only the starter. Any help quick would be great. Thanks---

No sound at all when you tun the key, but the lights and everything else works?

I would check the solenoid and starter. It may be a dead spot on the solenoid disc, if the starter turns the engine nicely, whether hot or cold.

I would doubt, from what you describe, that the car would just stop on you.

Could also be the contacts on the ignition switch. Part of your VATS.

does it try to start, or nothing at all (meaning you turn the key and don't even get the car to crank)?

If you don't even get the car to crank, it could be the clutch safety switch (if 6-spd). if it is auto, there is different one so you cant start it in gear.

I tried this

I had the same problem with my 84. It would not do ANYTHING but was still powering everything else. I jumped the negative battery terminal to a good ground and it fired right up. Now I just need to figure out where my bad ground is!!! Good luck -- and let us know what works.

Yo, life. You might wish to add another strap from a starter bolt to the frame to save some time. They're about $5 from Autozone and it's not like you can have too many sources of a good ground.

Wierd, I had the same thing. Didn't start at all. I messed around with the wiring and it started! Must be a ground as everyone states. And I thought she was just being tempermental.
Thanks for info fellas.

hi Guys I am a new member (an 86 roadster) i had the same problem turn the key all
power and no crank from the starter....then try it an hour later and it fires right up.
Ended up replacing the ignition module..seemed to fix the problem.
Although the next mornig the car would crank fireup then stop..an hour later it
would fire up and run perfect..then start 3or4 times without fail..then the same thing..crank start then stop
someone suggested it may be the vats module...although at around $700 cdn i was not so quick to replace it...any thoughts?

Check the fuel presure ,you did not say you drove it around.
Check fuel gauge how much fuel in tank.
What did you do befor you had the problem??

this problem did not exist prior to replacing the ignition module...(the problem that promted the new ignition module was the same as hooks...turn the key and nothing the starter would not click or crank..but had elec. power to everthing )
have not checked the fuel pressure...(although when the car starts it runs perfect and continues to run...meanig it does not stall out once you get it going)
the car either starts or it does not..when it does not start, it goes like this...the starter engages the engine turns over fires then imediatly dies..try 3-4 times same result...come back an hour or so later she fires up perfectly on the first crank.

Just because vets are a strange beast try this.
Take your key and unlock both doors,if using a pke make sure the doors are all unlocked by the plke also.
I would hook up a fuel presure gauge if the pump is bad the car will stall at times and you need to see what fuel presure you have before it stalls.

tried the door locks...did not seem related to when it started and when it didn,t.
i will try a take a look at the fuel pressure and fuel related systems this weekend.
keep you posted

Won't start, quite

There's an oil pressure sensor that must be 'pulled in' that keeps power going to the fuel pump. There are actually two sensors, one sends info to the dash, the other 'enables' the engine. They're located at the rear of the engine and share a 'manifold' that screws in facing forward.

This is hooks again--just a quick update-car started & i drove it to my mechanic--they kept it 2 days & said it started right up about a 100 times--could not check anything unless it was in a no start situation--will update if anything else happens. Thanks for all the good response.
