noise coming from left rear

I have a '96 with 61 K miles. When I put in park or reverse I hear a slight click/screaching dont laugh almost like a frog.. I know it is NOT in the rear end. The noise seems to me coming from the left rear. When I check the rear wheel bearings from the 12 & 6 oclock position there is slight movement. With the left having slightly more movement than the right. I also checked the front and there is absolutly no movement. Is it true there should be no movement at all in the rear. Finally if I rock the car back and forth I hear this same clicking/croaking noise. Would I be able to hear the wheel bearings. Tire wear is excellent, and car tracks well. Any thoughts on my next course of action. I dont want to do wheel bearings if they are not needed.

Also the noise only happens when car is on the ground. When I jack up the car to look for the noise I cant duplicate it. Any ideas..Ray

It could also be a u-joint. Mine made a lot of noise when one fell apart.

U-Joint

The problem with noises is that depending on their frequency, ie: low or high, they can be happening on one part of the car and be "transmitted" to another. My best bet would be the U-joints on the half shafts. If thats the case, make sure you change both U joints on the shaft.

wouldnt the u-joints make noise with each revolution they make. Not only when they have a load applied...

I had a very similar noise on my 93. I replaced the two axle shaft u-joints on the driver's side and put some antiseize on the spline that slides through the hub. I'm not sure which one did the trick, but it solved the problem. If you pull the spline yoke you will need a 36 mm socket. All in all it's not too tough.
