Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

Not the right year...?

The motor sure looks like a '78--the '80's had aluminum intake and valve covers, and dual snorkel air cleaner, yes?

The engine does look like a '78. But the body is definitely not '78.

looks liek they put on an 80 body

the vin isn't an 81, the cruise control isn't from an 81( not sure what it looked like in 79) the wheel center caps are pre 80 (easy enough to swap tho)

I think it is a '78. I had an '80 and by looking at those pictures, the dash board alone looks different than what was in the 80. And to me, something is amiss with the rear window, I just can't put my finger on it. Maybe the front & rear bumpers were replaced with 80-82 style??? Another thing is, I think my 80 sat a little lower than the one pictured does also.

If the vin is correct, it is a '78. wouldn't buy unless the seller presents a picture of the vin and code tag.

Not just the bumpers, but the side vents are definitely not from '78.

I would run a Car-Fax on this before I would even think about bidding on it....

The buy now price is rather low for this car with 64K on the clock...something smells

If the listed VIN is correct, then it's a '78 and not an '80 car. The Corvette Black Book lists the '78 VINs to be 1Z87L8S00001 thru 1Z87L8S440274. The '80 VINs would be 1Z878AS400001 thru 1Z878AS440614.

I remember back in the early 80's, it was popular for owners with 78's and 79's to replace the front and rear fascias with the 80 style look. I've seen many at car shows before, but they were NOT misrepresented as such.

The other thing is, this owner may have been duped himself, when he bought it 5 years ago. Who's knows? Bottom line is, I wouldn't buy it.

The speedometer on that car only goes to 85 MPH... not a '78 speedo either.

Believe it or not... in 1964 I knew a guy that cut the back divider out of his 63 so it would look like the New 1964 ;)

There is or used to be a member here from upstate New York that had a 78 setup the same way ;)

It looks like the front and rear clips have been changed in 78 I think those are multible parts making up front spoiler and I know the rear spoiler and clip are two seperate parts.

That is why you don't buy BIG things on ebay. I think a bunch of stuff off ebay is probably hot anyway. ;LOL

I've always been happy with the Corvette parts I've bought off ebay. But. I'd be very hesitant to buy a whole car there.

I don't know why honest people sell their cars on ebay, seems to me they get more money from a newspaper ad sale--that's where I bought my 'vette from--I saw the ad, went to look at it and paid what the man was asking because it was a fine 'vette.

Selling a car on ebay to me is kind of like trying to sell a 'vette at a garage sale...

I just use ebay to look at the cars I love and to get a feel for the market for the models and years. It is actually interesting to follow some of these cars.

There's definitiely different trends going on within e-bay as to prices.

I have noticed that 60's and early 70's muscle cars on e-bay are definitely getting ridiculous money! In fact, I have tracked Mustangs and a few Camaros that have gotten a couple of thousand dollars more for them than they are actually worth. I tend to think that if you are going to be extremely honest about how you present your car to the bidding public, why not get the most you can for it?? It just lets you buy more Vette parts for the new one you get:D
