Oil Burn

Is it true that vette engines are designed to burn a little bit of oil? If so, does anyone know the specifications of how much versus how long

Dom,our year vette may or may not have that condition!mine did it a couple of times,then it was fine.something about the ring in the # 2 something or other not seating right.you'll have to drive it a while to see if your car has the consumption issue.

I don't know about your Corvette...but I had a friend with a brand new Eldorado a couple years ago. It burned a quart of oil every 2000 miles. According to Cadillac it was "Normal" ...My friend sold the car and bought a Lexus immediately.

Yes. Most Corvette C5s use some oil.

That's what C4C5Specialist told me. I personally find that quite unacceptable.

I worked with a guy who had a Saturn that burned 1 quart a week. He brought it in to the dealership and they told that it was normal. WTH?:eyerole I will not buy an American car for heavy use. My daily use is a Toyota Camry V6.

A quart a week on a saturn doesn't sound normal though.
1 qt every 2k is about what mine uses. It doesn't bother me in the least.

Isn't it a 5 quart capacity?

If it is, isn't that bad for the motor to have burned 20% of it's oil? And that's not even close to the oil change interval!

My 99 Vert has 90K and has not burned a drop.......knock on wood.

In my opinion, a quart in 2000 miles isn't bad at all.

If nothing else, it lets you know that you have adequate upper cylinder lube ...... .

Really, I sure wouldn't worry about a quart in 2000. I mean, the rings can't be expected to scrape 100% of the oil off the walls, some is bound to be left
behind and burnt.

my 1995 with 64,000 miles burns 0 quarts in 3,000 miles
my 2004 with 3,400 miles burns 0 so far(changed oil at 3,000)

I guess some burn oil and some don't

Is the 2004 an automatic or manual? A manual will sometimes use more oil if you keep the revs up.

Well my '04 is an automatic...but...when I nail it, it goes to 6000rpms then changes gears..so yes it does get up there in revs just like a stick...

The problem is not winding it out on the shifts but holding it in the lower gears too long. Basically driving around at constant 3500-4500 rpms. The automatic transmissions shifts much better than a lot of people that have manuals do.

It is normal to burn a little, but more than a quart in 2k miles not good. Its either getting past the rings or valve guides . To much oil consumption will cause detonation. :ugh

My '98 doesn't burn a drop. I drove a 4300 mile road trip last summer in 11 days and it never moved off the full mark on the dip stick.
