This year I may only put on about 700+ miles on my Vette, which has the same amount of miles on the Mobil-1 that's in there. Should I change my oil for the year ? or wait until I put on more mileage which may take me almost another year ? Normally I change out at 2,000, but I may not make that mileage for 2 years. What do you folks think?:W

Depends if you are going to store it for the winter. If you are then you can change the oil regardless of the mileage annually before you store it. In my opinion it doesn't hurt to change it annually anyway.

The opinions will be to either change it annually regardless of mileage or change it at a specific mileage regardless of time.

So here is my opinion which is the same as some and opposite of others.

I change my oil annually since I don't exceed 3000 miles per year. I'm more comfortable with the fact that any contaminants and moisture (which probably burns off) will be drained out with the old oil. The additive package and lubrication may still be to spec with Mobil 1 but I just want the old oil out of there on an annual basis at the very least.

only 700 mile a year!! man you got to drive her more!! yes i would change it before you store it with normal oil, and after you get it out of the winter barn to drive drop it and put the mobil one in.

I have to borrow a quote from Z06 Tom that had me rolling.

“Confucious Say: Oil cheap, engine not...”

Well call me cheap then. According to my book I had 460 miles when I changed oil last month, Mobil one. Even if it is only a year old I don't throw it away. The used oil goes into my Trail Blazer, good for 4 months, and in my lawn mower and generator if needed.

Well sir, I certainly won’t call you cheap, but you’re probably OPEC’s worst nightmare! :L

I changed my oil in the vette before the Cruisefest with Mobil extended performance 10w30. It now almost has 3000 miles on that same oil. I will change it before winter sets in and the car sits, and then I will change it in the spring for the driving season, and then again in the fall since I don't put that many miles on my vette. Just my 02.

I put on about 3000 miles a year. I change my oil prior to winter storage with Mobil 1, I start it monthly and bring it up to temp over the winter, In the spring I change oil again with Mobil 1. Two oil changes a year is certainly cheaper than a new engine.

Most always you should change the oil before it sits over the winter. I will change the oil in the spring too, even though it has no miles, starting it over the winter could lead to some moisture. I have thought several times about using oil over again in something else. There have been times when I have only put 1000 miles on conventional oil. When I go to take it to autozone, I am not sure if I grabbed an old container or not.

I do the same thing....every September I change it. Around 2K miles a year. I'll tell ya what...I've never had a car will oil that clean. Don't run it much at all in the winter though.

My two cents worth

As stated before there are a lot of opinions on the subject of oil change intervals. Now here is another one and it has nothing to do with the damage caused by how many miles are on the oil. It has everything to do with the damage caused by a car only run 700 miles a year. I hope you are putting stabil and dry gas in the tank and topping it off before storage. If not water condensation will form in the tank and the gas will become contaminated. This will gum up the fuel line filters and injectors not to say anything about how bad the engine will run on this bad gas. Unlike popular belief gas does in fact go bad with storage. Next spring we will have a whole series of articles about how bad the cars are running and what parts are needed to fix the problems and the car only has low milage on it. In our love for the Corvette and belief that it should only be driven in the summer and then only a few short trips we do more harm than anything else to our cars. With that said I am now going out get in my vette and go to a funeral that will put 500 miles on the car today.:lou

I change when D.I.C. say's 35%-40% oil life Remaining!! No Matter What!!:upthumbs junk!!

I have had so much trouble with bad gas in things over the years that I tend to drain things. I will fill the 67 up so I know how much Stabil to put in and run it for one last blast before a long winter's nap. Then I siphon as much gas out as I can and use it in the truck and seal the filler with plastic. When I start in the spring I bring 10 gal in jerry cans to delute the little that is left in the tank before start up. Put 20 miles on it and change the fuel filter and she's ready to go.

I change the oil and filter before the spring startup.

I'm in the same boat, I just changed mine after 680 miles since last August. You should cange the oil and filter at least once a year even if miles are less that 3,000.

my 94 gets changed in the fall before it I park it for the winter, and in spring I change the oil filter, and once every other month I change the filter, but I tend to put about 5000 miles on it durring the summer. the 85 only gets changed in the fall as I drive it around 2k a year. neither are daily drivers. my daily driver gets a new oil filter every other month, I really never change the oil in it, just a quart every other month. my thought is clean filer, clean oil, I am makeing the filter companies allot of money though.....

I probably put less miles than that on my 04 this past year (been too busy refurbishing the 96) and I am not planning to change yet but here's why. The oil temperature gauge is the one I watch most because it is important to get the oil hot enough for long enough to drive moisture out. Water is a byproduct of combustion and 1.2 gals of it is formed with every gallon of gasoline burned and some of it always gets by the rings into the crankcase. This is why you always see water running out of the exhaust tips for a few minutes after a cold start. Water in the oil will form acids when combined with other byproducts of combustion. The exhaust system will also benefit by driving the car enough to get everything up to operating temperature.
