Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

Only the 96 has it!

Eat Viper's!!!!!!!!!!!

Whalepilot are you telling me that your engine is not the orig engine that came with the car??

The truth is that it should have and l'm sure you have a lot of fun with your sleeper toying with other cars.

Alan

p.s. The I drive is too complicated for me and BMW. Did you see the way they rounded the rear of the 7 series?

Whalepirot, my friend's 850 CSi would auto-close the windows at 124 (200 kph). And yes, I experienced that personally. What a rush that car was...

Kingman, check out the latest AutoWeek. They re-did the 7-series slightly, front and rear. Still too oddball for me, but it looks much better than before. And iDrive still sucks...

Love Autoweek

I never miss a copy, great bathroom reading!

Funny... the Black Book says 94 was the first year, but the "Cor-Vette Specs" book first mentions it for 96. Just lists "power windows standard" for the other years.

And I found Hib's name mentioned on no less than 4 pages!
[RICHR]

The "Cor-Vette Specs" book does mention it. Check out page 207, first line on the page says "....the driver's window has an "Express Down" feature." I know the book pretty well, I just about wore my copy out while I was searching for a Vette this summer. It by far is the best source for info on the C4's, I highly recommend it.

Cor-vette's spec book!

Hi Tom

as long as you already have the book, did you find out anything else that we might have overlooked?

Thanks

Alan

As I am old and my mind is failing, it appears that most of the of the other things have been covered. OBDII came in 1996, even though starting at 94 we had the OBDII connector, just prepping for the future.I'll do some checking to see if there is anything else I missed.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

There was l believe a difference in the brakes, is this a fact? Did your boook mention that some parts were actually bonded or glued to lessen the rattles?
This was done for sure.

Alan

If you want to see what's included in Mike's C4 Cor-Vette Specs book, take a look at the page I copied from the model year 1987 for my web site: 1987 Cor-Vette Specs.

There's a lot of information contained in that book; stuff you'll probably never need and stuff you may not even understand, like the fuel line material -- Super Terne coated steel. Now what the hell is that? :L

The 1996 LT-1 was the only engine in the C4 with a crank position sensor.

It is also the last engine built for Corvettes in Flint, Michigan, The LS-1 and later were moved to the Romulus, MI. facility, without Remus I suppose.

Alan, I don't recall them saying anything about gluing panels, but it wouldn't surprise me. I do know that in 1995 the J55 (big brake option) became standard, whereas before it was an option. My 94 Z07 has them, but again it was part of the Z07 package.

"TERNE-Mixture of lead and tin.* TIN-Chemical symbol Sn. Soft, silvery-white metal with high malleability and ductility, but little tensile strength. One of the earliest metals known; because of its hardening effects on copper, used to make bronze for fabrication of construction and hunting tools and war weapons as early as 3500 B.C. With a melting point of 449-degrees F and a boiling point of 4384-degrees F, tin has the longest molten-state range of any common metal; thus, its principal use as a steel coating and constituent in alloys to make bronze, pewter, die-casting alloys, and specialty titanium alloys. Used in biocides to control insect infestation, and in solders for joining pipes or electrical conductors."

"Hot dip: In steel mill practice, a process whereby ferrous alloy base metals are dipped into molten metal, usually zinc, tin or terne, for the purpose of fixing a rust resistant coating."

from Purchasing.com and rollformedshapes.com. Didn't find a reference for "super terne"

Express up????

kingman said:
I just found out that the 96 is the only C4 that the drivers windows goes up when touched automaticly!

All of my cars have that option and took it for granted that every car has that cheap feature.

Let me tell you that the 96 was really an odd year!

Alan

I don't think so :L I Got a Collectors Edition, Grand Prix GTP and a Lumina all with express down. Sounds like you got a bad switch. May want to replace it before the volunteers in fire suits with a few:beer come running at your car with axes:mad and fire hoses

All the crazies from Jersey are flocking here!

I made a mistake by saying express up instead of express down.

Boy do we have a tough crowd and we corrected it a couple of pages back. But l don't mind, l'm always being corrected like my dog!

Alan

p.s. Just too many Jersey guys here at one time.

The thing I liked best about the 96's

Was the LT4 that was put in 6,359 of em. :upthumbs

I can testity it was/is 1 awesome motor, I put 24K miles on ours before we sold it and everyone of them was Sweeet!

You breaking them aren't you!!!!!!!!

6 Shooter, you have to know by now that l already said that l should have picked up a LT4 in the first place, but why do you keep on bringing it up?

The only good thing is that now l have to move up to at least a C5. If l had the LT4 l would have sticked with it instead of moving up.

Sorry - Not trying to offend. I wish I could have kept the 96, it was/is Sweeeet! :D

Dwayne, your LT4 Looks bada** :_rock . Sweet looking rides you have had, and have now.
Thank You - I've been very fortunate . . .

I'm hoping to get a few pictures of my old 1996 & current 2000 together sometime this spring by the Corvette Plant & National Corvette Museum.

Express up/down/sideways (sliding doors) - safe?

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 118 "Power-Operated Window, Partition, and Roof Panel Systems" - Applies to Passenger Cars, Multipurpose Passenger Vehicles, and Trucks with a GVWR of 10,000 Pounds or Less.
This standard specifies requirements for power-operated window, partition, and roof panel systems to minimize the likelihood of death or injury from their accidental operation.

It was amended a number of years ago by a Corvette guy who worked for me. It originally did not permit operation of window and etc. unless the key was in the lock and the key was in the on or accessories position (a supervised mode). Express down was allowed, but express up was not. He and I changed it to add a requirement for a force-sensitive mode that would not require the key to be present (unsupervised mode). It was similar to, but protected better than the older ECE regulation on the same subject. Now, manufacturers are placing the force-sensitive equipment in vehicles, and if their design can comply, it will close windows, doors, hatchback, sunroof and etc. even without the key being in the vehicle. You can now have all your windows and sunroofs shut if the vehicle senses rain!

Anyway, the Corvette guy got promoted and now another guy who works for him (sadly, only a Corvette wannabe) added a non-contact sensing provision that will allow unsupervised closures and protect without any contact to a human. The force-sensitive mode can make you hurt, but it wouldn't kill or do much of any damage, even to a child.

So, that is why you see minivans with automatic opening and closing doors and hatches.

The Corvette guy owns a '67 Green Roadster with a 427, and a '70 Blue Coupe with a ZL1 aluminum motor (he also has the complete original LT1 motor.) He also has a couple dozen bare big block because he is a block broker.)

He also was the guy who amended the lighting standard to allow the vintage reproduction of Lectric Limited's T3 headlamps for restoration of GM vehicles.

Who else would you want working for NHTSA but real Car Crazy guys?
