Hello All, I have a 1996 Lt1 and the car is curently in the shop. The car keeps overheating.. The machanic said the radiator is fine and the cap so he changed the thermostat and still having the same problem. Can anybody help with the problem??

What conditions cause the car to overheat?

Is it losing coolant first, then overheating? Or vice versa?

Did the mechanic put the correct LT1 style thermostat in the car (they are different from the previous L98 and all older style GM stats)?

,,,,,

Well I had the same problem last fall. I put on a new thermostat, and checked the radiator. All was good, but it still overheated. My problem wound up being the water pump. Are you losing any water? Sometimes you'll lose water but not be able to find a leak. If the water pump goes bad, it will leak from the little hole on the bottom side of the pump, almost imposible to see the leak. You can use a mirror to check under the pump for that.

How about the fans? When my fan took a dump my car warmed up pretty good. I think your car has a dual fan setup.

Well, another thing that people dont' think to looks is plastic bags. They get wedged up in there between the A/C condensor and the radiator. Or, even other type of debris.... No air.... no coolie.... overheatie....

I'd check that out and see. ;)

What are your temps?? Are you actually overheating, or just runninig real hot??

I had alot of gunk up in between my radiator, like chevy addict described, makes a diff. heres my thread, read thru it, alot of it may apply to your problem also.

Glad to see you will be back on the road cruising. I hope that 3 lbs of stuff isn't heavy on your wallet.

I knew it! It is utterly amazing how quickly and HOW MUCH stuff can get trapped in there. Must be all that fast driving we vetters do.;)

Radiator Screen...........

Mid America sells a screen sheild for this very problem, I was going to build my own, but the one they sell looks like a nice product, I will be getting one after pulling out and cleaning out all the crapola I found in there, part # 618-145, sells for $60.
