painting motor parts?

Jack

yes, I still plan on removing the intake and valve covers this winter. since reskinning is now out of the budget (sigh..... I can already see the next 20 years of a reduced corvette budget.....) I'll try Paul's suggestions and it it doesn't give me the results I want than i'll do the alumi blast paint.

By taking the intake and covers off i'll be able to touch up a few areas on the block with the Chevy Orange paint that has peeled or gotten eaten away by various fluids. Plus, with the new paint job on the car, I'm not taking any risks with harsh cleaning solvents or paint overspray as I work on the engine parts!

Way back near the beginning of this thread Marlar said; I am not sure what reskinning is. Me neither. What is it? Who does it? What's it cost? Thanks. Oh, one more question for Barry. Once the A/C is in where will you install the baby seat? :)
Congrats to both you and Linda!

I had my intake and exhausts reskinned... The process is a closely guarded "secret", but I believe the aluminum parts are tumbled in a barrel with some sort of media, like you would do to polish rocks. Really came out looking like a new casting. He may respray them with a molten aluminum, but I could find no evidence of it.

The exhausts were blasted slightly, sprayed with molten aluminum, then sent back with 2 cans of cast-blast. You spray the final coat at home.

You could always call and see what the process involves.

Paul answered your reskinning process question as well or better than I could have, thanks Paul!

as for the baby seat that's no problem, it will fit just perfect in her Lexus! ;LOL

So, you're saying you don't need the A/C in the '65 after all? Great! Who needs the horsepower drain!

did you see me say that? nope, I don't think so!
A/C in the '65 is a major REQUIREMENT.
sorry, call me a wuss but that car just gets way too hot on those hot, humid, miserable days. It just takes all the fun and enjoyment out of using it during so much of the summer. You wouldn't undersatand since your car already has a/c in it! ;LOL

should have gotten a vert

nah, I love my coupe! :D
besides, in a vert when it's real hot and humid all you have is more hot air blowing over you plus the hot sun beating down on your head. i'd still need A/C.

don't get me wrong, I love verts also and was open to both types when I was looking for a car, but i'm real glad i ended up with my coupe. I think the lines on the coupe are what C2's are all about and it gives it a tougher, meaner look than the verts. Not to say I wouldn't love to have a vert in the garage sitting next to my coupe so I have the best of both :)

We will second the Congrats....!!!!!

Andy, Donna, Alex and Kacie:_rock

Guess this will be Linda soon..... :puke Although I hope not!!

Barry,When it's real hot I have to turn off the A/C in my '66. That's why I bought the '60. :)

I guess I could agree with that if I lived in a place like Phoenix. But I don't, and I grew up outside, in the sun, water skiing or playing volleyball on the beach (and later just plain ol drinkin on the beach) or just fishing or riding a motorcycle - and being in the sun never has bothered me. In the Vette, if I am getting a little warm, I guess I would just drive faster. I know that Paul feels differently (more like you Barry) and he owns a vert but to each their own - remember I am the guy that pulled a brand new Vintage AIr system OFF his car

why? Do you have cooling problems with the '66 when it's real hot? Kinda defeats the whole idea of having A/C if you need to turn it off when it gets too hot out......

Jack
The summer heat didn't bother me as much when I was younger as it does now. I grew up on a farm and used to be out under the hot sun from dawn to dusk working in the fields, baling hay, moving cows, planting, plowing, etc.
Anymore though the heats just gets to me too much.
Like I said, call me a wuss, but I prefer comfort now. :D

Well, it's a big block after all. Do you remember all the problems you had driving 30 minutes in a parade recently? Try it with the A/C on and see how you make out. The condenser for the A/C sits in front of the radiator. So it expels heat when the unit is on and that in effect pre-heats the air going through the radiator. Big blocks don't like creeping in traffic with the A/C off, much less with the A/C on. Cruising it's not a problem but stopping and going or creeping are out.</p>Is anyone else having problems using the tools in the reply to thread box? None of the icons are working for me. Bold, italic, underline, etc. None of them. I don't know if someting happened that I've caused or if the recent upgrade that knowcked out my ability to post pictures caused this to happen as well.

Terry

I know BB cars tend to run hotter than my SB but I can't imagine that when it was new that they would have designed a cooling system for the car that couldn't handle it when the A/C was on.
don't get me wrong, and you know that I don't know much about the workings on these cars, but are sure your cooling system is working 100% correct? Having an A/C system on the car seems pretty pointless if you can't use it when it gets hot out. :confused

Everything so far seems to be working ok with the new updated forum software for me although I've seen JohnZ complain about things not working correctly for him either so you aren't the only one that seems to be having problems with it.

Barry,My '66 has a new Griffin Radiator in it, a properly operating clutch fan and a water pump that kicks ass. GM's engineering deficiencies regarding cooling a big block mid year are well documented. The only thing that could be worse would be if it was an automatic transmission car. Then the hot tranny fluid would be running through the radiator too! Yikes! In case you are wondering, I didn't buy the car because it had A/C. If it wasn't an A/C car I'd have bought it for the same money and been just as happy. If creature comfort was what I was after I'd have never bought either of my Vettes. Now my next Corvette purchase, whenever that happens, will be a different story!

sorry Terry, you know I wasn't trying to critisize your car - it was just curiosity. It just seems a shame to have a car with factory A/C that can't be used when it's hot!

Hey Barry, I sure don't think you're a wuss - like I said, even Paul (I can vouch for his non-wussie-ness) favors AC, and he has a vert AND lives even further up the coast. To each their own.

As for the AC & cooling, know this: even when new these cars did not get a great dose of excess cooling capacity, and you will most definitely be adding some strain to your cooling system by adding the AC (driving the compressor, the dryer in front of the rad reducing its performance, etc). In almost ANY car built in the 60s, using your AC while sitting in stop and go traffic on a 98 degree day was problematic - hence the point made by Vette66AirCoupe - when you really really want it the most (not moving very fast, on the hottest of hot days) you might just be a little leery about using it, just like you would have been back in 65 driving it brand new. Might not be the case though. Prior owner of my car put a VA system on (while the car had a copper/brass replacement rad) and it put the car over the edge. I wonder how it would do with the VA system now, after a Dewitts resto rad, good hoses, proper fan and clutch, etc. My guess is that I would still be in a spooky place in stop and go on a 98 degree day, maybe not.

yes Jack, I understand and in Terry's case he has a BB which is even harder to keep from going over the edge I'm sure but if I find that trouble on my car after installing A/c I'm going to be very upset. If I spend the $$$ on an A/C system I expect it to work and not cause me problems when I need it the most! My radiator looks pretty new so it was probably replaced during the restoration before I bought the car, I have a new fan clutch, and the Classic Auto Air system I'm probably going to get looks to come included with an electric fan mounted right at the radiator so i'm hoping that will be enough to keep the motor cool enough to handle the extra load of the A/C. If it doesn't, than i'm going to be a very unhappy camper......... and so will Linda which is even worst! :D
