Performance enhancements for 82's

MoeJr mentioned the kickdown sleeve. If you go with the 3.73 gears, your RPMs will go through the roof when it kicks down from 4th gear at 50% throttle. The B&M sleeve will kick it down at about 75% throttle making the problem much worse. I modded my 700r according to a suggestion on the Crossfire forum and it will not kickdown ever from 4th gear unless I manually shift to third or I get my speed down below about 45 mph.

It's a simple mod and I talked to the guys at the local B&M shop about it and they aggree it is best for performance applications and it will not harm the transmission uless you are lugging it in 4th gear and then put a lot of torque to it expecting the car to take off. It will not kick down and will stress the xmission.

Blue82:

I don't have a 'kick-down sleeve';
other than the 3.73s, my '82 is bone-stock, but I don't think the RPMs would go 'through-the-roof' when a down-shift from 4th/AOD into 3rd occurs, unless you were WELL-over the speed limit.

I think I was turning 'just' 4100-4300, in 3rd Gear, when I trapped at 90.89 MPH last season.

The 3-4 upshift sleeve I got was from www.transmissioncenter.net. It was like 50 bucks and 60 to have the tranny shop install it. With my stock size tires on my 84 and 3.07 axle my WOT 3-4 shift occurs at 115 mph. This is also a DIY job if ya wanna tackle it.:D

ALL '82s came with A/OD 700R4 transmissions, and either 2.72, or 2.87 gearing from Bowling Green;
that's how i run 75 MPH at less than 2000 RPMs.
Just curious as my knowledge is limited in regards to the 700R4, but didn't they undergo some minor revisions in the early-mid 90's? That's what got me thinking that the 82's weren't the same 700R4 that I have in my car now (from B.T.O.) For some reason, I'm thinking the 700R4's they (B.T.O.) build are from newer stockpiles. (But not to hijack this thread...there's plenty of 700R4 discussions elsewhere.)

Evo:

I know even less about these 700R4s, but I'm under the impression that until the mid-'80s, the 700R4 was even wimpier than usual, with a 27-spline input shaft, lighter parts, etc.
I'm told to look for '84-later cores to build-around.

Other than the OD the very few times I've 'hit-the-open-road', this offers nothing for me (1st gear is too low, too-wide of gear ratios, converter locking/un-locking all the time, etc., and it's in perfect working order, too!).

I'm thinking that one day, I'll get a C5 as my 'weekend get-away/hit-the-road' Vette, I'll convert the '82 over to a 'more-traditional'-type hot rod (ZZ4 or ZZ502, THM350, and 3.73s) for local cruises and shows, and the '80 will be 'strip-only'.

small chage good gain

New owner of a pristine 82 Collector's Edition. Like evrything about the car but the anemic 200 hp engine. Goal is to push net hp to around 350 hp with similar torque numbers and 275+ RWHP. Clearly not wed to throttle bodies as long as car looks original. Any ideas?
bolt on a small blower, instant power, at a reasonable cost.
just beware to much compression could cost you a rebuild.

check out vortec super chargers web site.
i admit my 78 is a carby model and would be different to a injected model
but there is some interesting bolt on units that will fit under a stock bonnet
with some forethought and imaginitve plumbing.
regards ernie.

Here's an idea for more performance out of an 82:

(yes it's an 82)

yes that is a alternative i gave some thought to as well but the cheese and kisses would have had my gangoulies in a sling had i done any more than thought about it.
the super is a lot less expensive and who needs a airconditioner anyway.
regards ernie

Glensgages, I really need to change out that stinkin 85 mph speedo. I turn about 2700 rpm at 70 mph in 4th gear so you're right, I was going MUCH faster than I thought...
