1970 Dodge Dart Swinger - 340 cu in V8 - My Dad's car who gave it to me. Older sister took it over.

1977 Ford Granada Coupe - 250 cu in I-6 - Slower than a snail! Woman ran a red light, totalled the car.

1969 Dodge Coronet Superbee - 383 cu in V8 - my first Musclecar I got to keep for a while!

1984 Jeep CJ-7 - 242 cu in I-6 - Loved this fun offroader. Had to sell it to fund college. :eyerole

1988 Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R - Turbo-intercooled I-4 -my first import sportscar.

As you can see I have had some big iron in this list but with 6 children and towing an 18' bass boat for 20 plus years, always needed a hefty vehicle.

Compared to today's cars, those 1960's and 1970's musclecars were atrocious! They aren't anywhere as nice as today's cars, or even cars built in the mid-late 1980's. In addition, they were not as fast as TODAY'S musclecars! Okay, some of them were but they were very rare. Today you have the Mustang (in differing levels of musclecar performance), the Camaro, Firebird (Pre-2001), GTO's (2002-2004), Challenger (2008-present), Charger, 300C, Chevrolet Caprice Police interceptor, Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. If you go a litte further back to the 1980-1990's you will have lots of relatively inexpensive Mustang GT's, Camaro's, Firebirds, Caprices, and Crown Vics. Anything in the 1970's have gone up in price yet drive terribly. You are living in the golden age of the V8 Musclecar, perhaps the final hurrah of the pushrod American V8 before we all make the switch to hybrids and pure electrics! Enjoy it!

Having said that, I was a teenager just about when the 1960's and 1970's musclecars were depreciating like mad! This was the early to mid-1980's. Back then, you could have a Camaro S/S or a Challenger with a 440 for about $3k! Remember though that a new large car back then cost around $10-$15k. I remember thumbing through the local Auto Trader (no internet) and finding dozens of musclecars for sale and many were pretty damn cheap. In addition, back then most cars were still powered by horribly underpowered inline 6's with carburators (V6's were rare), imports all had tiny 4-bangers, and most American cars had a V8 as standard. I think GM was still just beginning to make their horrible 2.8 V6! Ford had a much better V6. Oh well! Brings back memories. I am glad for today's modern marvels.

PS: In 1985 the C4 Corvette with a mere 230 bhp was King Of The Hill! Fastest, best handling, best looking car for a mere $25k! The only two cars that could trump its acceleration (not handling) performance were the Porsche 911 Turbo and the V12 powered Ferrari Testarossa at 3 times the price!

If you had grown up back then, you would have appreciated the cars of the time. Compared to today's cars, I'll take today's cars. But when your only comparison is the cars of yesteryear, they were pretty good.

A few years back I inherited a 1968 Charger R/T. After getting it running again, I couldn't wait to sell it. What a beast. And I owned one back in the early ''70s" and thought they were great.

With '60s/70s' muscle cars we also had cheap gas, so the fact that big block muscle cars were lucky to get 15 MPG on the highway didn't seem to matter so much. My HEMI routinely got 8 in town and 10 on the highway. No worries - until the 1973 oil embargo. I carried a 5-gallon gas can in the back seat for a cross country drive just to make sure I had enough to get to the next gas station that was open.
They didn't handle for beans and they didn't stop very well either.
Bought my Charger in 1971 for $1400 and my HEMI in 1974 for $2200. That still seemed like a lot back then.

I finally bailed out of the classic muscle cars in the mid-80s when I bought a Grand National Buick - not as fast as my HEMI both it had A/C, power everything, cruise control and got 26 MPG.

I'm not making the argument that today's performance cars/muscle cars arn't the best, EVER, Period. Since 2000, we have had a horsepower Renaissance with all kinds of BIG HP available but the difference is in the 60's it was affordable. Today, most of the new muscle cars/performance cars start at around 30K or more.

Yes, most of them by today's standards are slower ,but not slow. The best of the best of that era could give anything a run for its money today, however, read ZL-1 Camaros, ZL-1 Corvette(s) 2 of them made, Baldwin-Motion Cars, Yenko Cars, COPO cars, Hemi's, Shelby Cobras, etc...

One thing I will say, they dont have the styling they used too and lets face it as nice as some of the new cars sounds, it pales in comparision to a cammed up muscle car.

NO doubt some of today's cars WILL be collectors items in the future. I wouldn't mind having a CTS-V or Pontiac G8 GXP.

I guess for me it is like my snowmobiles, I have ridden newer sleds and they are WICKED fast. I have a 1992 Polaris Indy 500, handles great, runs pretty good, rides better than the older sled, etc...The other sled is a 1980 Polaris 440, the last of the old leaf spring front suspension sleds. It isn't the fastest thing, doesn't handle worth a poop, is a pain to ride, rides like poop, by all accounts it is like an old muscle car. BUT, it is the sled I perfer to ride, why, its louder, and the sound is different than new sleds, new sleds have an indy car sound, the old 440 is more choppy at idle, less INDY and more Nascar, vibrates like all hell, etc...

The thing is the newer sled(s) lack character and a soul. The old one feels like it is a living breathing thing, in comparison. Not saying newer cars dont have character and soul, but its just somehow lacking.
