Polymer vs Wax

CONGRATULATIONS! You found the blemishes on a 23 year old vehicle which any good camera will show. Can you see the scratched on the hood also?

You're DEAD WRONG about the C5 WHICH PROVES MY POINT!

So you're saying you don't drive "a 3M protected car" in the wintertime in sand, salt, ash, & calcium cloride (which is what I drive through every winter). Your bus pass must get a good workout.

I have experience with your 3M product in the winter and I can tell you that after 6 weeks, "the rocks" won't have any 3M left on them. You're only fooling yourself if you think 3M lasts longer. The only joke is ignorance of the truth.

1st of all it does prove my point pictures can tell alot if they are a good quality photo. In the photo on the nose it appears like a light white scratchand a blemish but that also proves your point the quality of the camera makes a big difference. My photo would probably show all my blems if there were any as it is an expensive camera. My 3m applications last much longer than 6 weeks. I use it on a $48,000 dollar Suburban that gets waxed only twice a year that gets driven through everything, my company truck gets waxed even less than that and it steill looks great and beads nicely. So to make the observation that I must need a bus pass because you obviously made the assumption that once I buy my Corvette a hillbilly from Arkansas must need to ride public transportation. Well you are very wrong. All I stated was my vehicles don't sit in the elements every day they sit in a garage.

Your right it has deteriated far from its original thought mainly due to your inability for someone else to share his thoughts about another product or share that he feels and is his opinion. It should not be discounted.

Second it's not your forum moderators don't need participants or forum police crying about every thread. If you want it closed close it for yourself--don't reply to it anymore!!!!

I would use polymer too because it's non-abrassive, right? I think wax is an abrassive, and that's not great for the paint in the long run. Any comments on that?

I appreciate all the feedback....I'm sorry that JJU and SRLocke got in a ----ing match on waxes....my initial question was basically are polymers better than wax and if so is there a reason...I'm guessing it is simply preference...right now I use Meguires classic which is a carnuba and it looks great on YVette...she says thanks every time I do some detailing...I was just wondering if there was a 'scientific' reason one way or the other...being an engineer, I'm anal about data and results...that sort of stuff...even in all the hub-bub...there are nuggets that can be dug out...you guys just don't get personal...keep to opinions (everyone has one) and just back up with "data"...then everyone can just take it or leave it....that makes a good thread, slamming....I don't think so...

Here's a reason I use 3M:

Once every so often a product innovation comes along that is truly an advancement and establishes a new standard of performance. Acrylic Silicone Fluoropolymer (A.S.F.), developed by research chemists at 3M, is such a breakthrough. By chemically grafting silicone and fluorine onto an acrylic backbone, a new fluoropolymer is created that is extremely slippery, water repellent and bonds to modern automotive finishes.

Perfect-It Show Car Paste Wax is the first 3M product to take full advantage of A.S.F. Suspended in the wax, these fluoropolymers create a surface that actually repels dirt and grease - they just don’t stick to it! Show Car Paste Wax fills minor scratches and swirls and protects new and like-new finishes with a tough, high gloss wax shield.

Note: This is a pure wax without any cleaning properties. Surfaces should be pre-cleaned with 3M Imperial Hand Glaze (fresh paint) or 3M Perfect-It Swirl Mark Remover(cured factory paint) prior to first time application.

I find it give me the best of both worlds Polymer longevity and carnuba shine, depth and protection. As far as I'm concerned my cars finish will outshine & outlast any product out there. Just my.02 though. By the way thanks for being open minded. If you decide to go my route e-mail me I'll shoot ya my routine.

Would that be an abrassive, though?

the show car wax is non-abrasive.

Hmm....so "Perfect-It Show Car Paste Wax" isn't an abrassive? I think I'll have to look into this. Could I get away with this and using Meguiar's Car Wash on her? You can mix brands, right? It shouldn't make a difference, right?

Really? That's perfect. That's exactly what I use. And now I want to use your wax too because it's non-abrassive. Where did you get it? Order online? Or is it pretty popular to be in stores?

You can get it at 3M's online store or Napa and Oreilly's Auto Parts can get it. If they don't have it check with any reputable body shop they can tell you who the local dist is.
E-mail me I'll shoot you my routine and the product's I use.

What happened???

I go away for a few days and come back to a shooting match over waxes and polymers???!!! Gentlemen...please! I'm the Care & Detailing moderator and don't feel it's necessary to close this thread if we all realize that everyone's entitled to their own wax preferences. Let's not stoop to this level.

If you get the Wax Test (http://www.thewaxtest.com/) it will tell you that polmers (a.k.a. synthetics) will last 4 to 6 times longer than Carnuaba products. These are independant testers that received no money for their work from the product manufacturers.

I use Zaino and if you purchase ZFX you can apply up to three coats in a 24 hours period and get "the wet look" IMMEDIATELY. You can do this on a "prepared" car IN 2 HOURS!!! You can layer synthetics. You can not on carnuaba products or they start to yellow.

Carnauba is a Buzz-Word now and there are many products out there that aren't Carnauba waxes. They may contain Carnauba, but are blended with other waxes.

As far as the yellowing of a wax this is way too broad of a statement to say that that could happen. There are advantages to each type of product and generalizations aren't applicable to all products.
