Yesterday I struggled through the changing of my O2 sensors, they look as if they where the original ones (120,000 miles). Needless to say I managed to get the new ones installed without any problems. I then started my engine and smoke poured out of the exhaust, no big deal it went away. Now for my problem, I am getting a "Service Engine Soon" light every so often, but then it goes away and then comes back. I was wondering if this is normal, meaning the computer is "learning" the new o2 senors, or could I have a problem. Now since I have owned this car it has every so often idled rough, almost dieing, as if it was starving for gas or air. I was hoping changing the o2 sensors would cure this problem. Now the engine runs fine for a little bit, but right before the "Service Engine Soon" light illuminates the engine bogs down a little. Now I have put a scanner on this and the only codes it read where in the "History" which said my engine was running lean. I cleared the codes and have yet to get them to come back, but the problem still is happening. Could this be that I have had a problem all along and my old o2 sensors where not sensing it? Could I have some bad o2 sensors installed, the scanner says they are "ready"? Sorry for writing a story, but I want to give as much information as possible. Thank you very much and have a good New Year.

did you try disconnecting the batter for about 15 minutes to re-set the computer? I would try that first, if you haven't already...

Also, you bought GM O2 sensors, or did you get them from someplace else?

I bought them some place else, for the life of me I cannot remember who makes it. The battery was disconnected for 2 days while I did the sensor change.

The smoke you got was the coating on the sensors being burned off....keep in mind these sensors have to get plenty hot to function properly. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes, then hook it up and take the car for a spin, make sure it comes up to temp. Vigman can tell you the difference between open loop and closed loop, but until the sensors get up to temp I believe it stays in open loop. Once they are hot and ready...then it goes into closed loop...or vice-versa.
Then let us know of any codes you get for more help....good luck...

I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes and reset the computer. Started the car and went for a spin. The problem did not come back. I have my fingers crossed that it will not return. Thank you for the help, I am very excited to have my car running descent again.

Not a problem my friend....

Welcome to CAC.....

And Happy New Year...
