are there any NCRS judges on the forum that would toss an opinion on this fire -- I liek that last post about the "deductions" -- it gives me hope

One of "THE" judges already has. JohnZ is admired and appreciated by us all. And that's everywhere in the Corvette world. :)

that last post was from one such NCRS "guy". You can also pick up Corvette Enthusiast magazine and read his articles on mid-year repair tasks - they are all keepers - and we have him right here answering our insane questions for us (although I suspect if John sees one more "help, my C2 is running hot" post he will give up . . . )

naw, yours was more of "Hold my hand, I am about to lose my get-my-hands-dirty-wrenching-on-my-own-car virginity" kind of thing. :L :L ;LOL

guys -- news flash....THE DEAL ON THE 65 365 VERT IS OFF!!!!!! -- after reading all of your posts my head was spinning -- that speed shop tamp was stuck in my craw like a bad chicken bone --

and then he miracualously called me and we were trying make arrangements for the final showdown -- we were gonna put he car on the lift etc. -- but when it became difficult to find a day and time -- he began the chat about "regardless of what you might see under there I'm still firm on 42.5k"

I came back with my firm at 40 cash as the upside of that car is permanently clipped by the stamp -- he understood -- and we began to agree to part friends -- i was awash with relief -- you guys were in my head like a chorus....

then the conversation of the deposit came up and he said you know deposits are typically non-refundable -- Now you have to know that when I handed him the 400 bucks he had said.."I'll run inside and write something up..." -- I stopped him and said -- I trust you -- he said I like to do business with a handshake...

So today he says ...'listen I don't want to just take your 400 bucks but I feel okay with taking some of it...let's talk on Sunday"....I have to say that I would never have signed a piece of paper that stated that I would lose the 400 if we didn't come to terms -- I considered the 400 a "hold while we negotiate" type of thing -- i guess I'm okay with forfeiting some of the money -- I'd like it to be 100 but my gut tells me it's gonna be 200 --

I feel like a chump...but now I'm really ready to find the right girl -- I have the cash...as in it's in my pocket in two uncomfortably large envelopes -- I though I was gonna hook up with him and make this happen --

Not to be too forward but who do you guys know who owns a 65 vert that is FF and 4 speed -- I would love power steering 365 would be great but 350 is also great and 300 I would consider as well....I guess the big blocks are a consideration as well although I do realize that I'm fishing in much deeper waters there...

this has become a cliche but once again "neelfryer" is yelling "help!"

thanks guys -- I hope you all are at least getting some entertainment out of my "chicken minus it's head" routine ...... -- sean

Sean, please don't take this the wrong way and i'm not saying it to be mean but it's for this very reason that I suggested previously to NOT take money with you when you went to look at the car. If you ever put a deposit down without any paperwork saying you WILL get it returned than you must figure it can be lost. Hard lesson I know :(

Good to hear that deal is off though, I think you would have regretted it in the long run.

BTW, unless it was put on custom afterwards by replacing the oilpan, you will not find a 365hp car with PS as it was not available with that motor - the oilpan is larger and there is no room to put PS on the car. The 365hp cars have a 6 qt pan where the 350, 300, and 250hp cars have a 5qt pan.

I have the 365hp motor in my car and to honest I wish I ended up buying the 350hp instead many times. The 300hp and 350hp cars have a bit more torque on the lower rpm range which makes it easier to drive on the street. The power on the 365hp motor doesn't really kick in until around 3500rpm's where the torque on the lower hp motors kicks in sooner.
If I was looking around for another stock motor midyear SB car I'd hold off for a 350hp car with PS (and A/C) but you won't find a factory A/C car in the 40k range unless it needs some work, especially on a vert. on a non-A/C car 40k is reasonable for a good car. It's a shame that you weren't looking 2-3 months ago as my friend just sold his '65 vert with 350hp motor and both tops, KO's, and side pipes, in excellent condition except for the paint with looked great at 10feet but up close showed a lot of spidering (common on older paints) for 37k. Only thing you would not have liked on his car was the color (which was actually one of my top choices in the running when I was looking). It was Glen Green w/ black leather interior. Yes, numbers matching too. The buyer got a great deal.

this is awesome info...I will now focus on a 350 car...power steering makes it more streetable in Los Angeles by a long shot...and I am by NO MEANS insulted by the admonition about the deposit -- I've only left a deposit once before and I bought that car -- I didn't really know the "lose the deposit routine"

It was 400 bucks and it sounded like he was setting me up for a 200 dollar loss...I can handle that -- an education with that car as my bullfrog that I was able to slice open and consult experts about -- well worth it --

you guys will probably bump into my home town friend ray muller form upstate NY at carlysle -- he will be looking for a vette for me --

again thanks you guys -- sean

Personally I do not think that in this market you will have an easy time finding a nice matching numbers 365HP or 350HP stick roadster for anything less than middle 40's. The dealers are buying them up and selling them for 50 plus. Good Luck.

Sean,

I was thinking about you earlier tonight when I was on the Indiana toll road heading west. There was a car carrier load of old Corvettes heading east and on top was a '65-'66 Nassau Blue convertible. It might have been heading to Carlisle or it may have went south on I-69 to Auburn. The cars are coming in fast now for the Kruse fall auction. Always lots of Vettes there.

The L79 350 horse engine is an awesome piece but don't pass on a nice 300 horse car either. It has 1/2 point lower compression (10.5 vs 11.0) so gas is easier to find and it has plenty of stomp when you need it. The most all around enjoyable Corvette I have ever had was a 1965 red convertible with a 327/300, 4 speed and a 3.36 posi. I used it for a daily driver and it was great while returning 18.5 mpg on the highway.

I agree, your parameters (now you seem to be really focused on NM, and an SHP L76 or L79 - not that there is anything wrong with that, I was chasing the same thing a few years back) would suggest that you will be north of $40, unless the condition of the car is driving the price down.

I was going through this delema back in 1999 when I bought my 67. I wanted an affordable driver but do a look for a numbers matching car or the best car, frame, body and drivetrain that I can afford? I went with the best car that I could afford and that was in the best shape. One of the biggest reasons I did this was because the numbers thing seems like a game. At least to me. I read listing all the time for a block, heads, rear that has the date you may need for your car. It seems to me that if I wanted a "numbers matching" car it wouldnt be that hard to do and really it wouldnt be any better than what I have. I can understand the original, numbers matching thing but how many are really like that? And if they are, are they the color and engine combo you really want. If you look at the magazines, auctions, and listings I find it hard to believe that they produced that many original numbers matching, Red, big block 67 corvettes with AC, PW, Headrest, TRI-power, TI, PB,L89 aluminum heads, side exhaust etc...

seems to me a game. If I was playing, I would buy the best car with as many numbers matching components as I could find on it and then place a few ads for the pieces I need. Presto...I could buy the missing piece and I have a numbers matching game winner.

I hope I dont **** anyone off, this is just my opinion. :upthumbs

guys
great comments -- i particularly like the suggestion about a 300hp car -- I'm opening up more and more to different cars...I still want nassau blue vert 4 speed but will now consider 65-67 -- with 65 being top choice -- I would really love factory PS -- but really let me know of any cars you know of -- I have someone looking for me at Carlysle -- sean

Pomona Swap is tomoorow!!

It will be 110 degrees by noon,..........but us diehards will be there at 6:00AM, beating the bushes for rust free, matching number 65 nassau blue convertibles with white interior, 300 to 365 hp motor. I found a 365 in Las Vegas last year, and that car sold over the telephone to a good friend in three hours. He still has it, but it will probably cost $55 to buy it. He paid $48 in May of 04.

See you tomorrow?
Jim
