Hey Guys.....
Well considering the search function is kinda shot.... Im going o have to ask for your comments...

I was lookin at the Power Effects exhaust for my 96 LT4. I want to buy just 2 "Power Capsules" (The ttunable mufflers) and flange them into my exhaust... then put an X-pipe in there. I think this is a much better route then paying $1250 for the full exhaust with the resonator... Id rather have the X-pipe as well

What are your comments about this... the power capsules will cost me $450 for the pair and flanges... plus shipping..... Figure $500 to make it a round number

I like the idea of being able to change the noise level a little bit...

A guy I race with has em & he likes how they work. I put Corsa on & I like mine also (a lot). I think my black car needed some:cool and those Corsa tips are to die for. I think the power capsules are a little plain looking but the tune factor is neat.

Here is how they loooked and sounded on my 85'

Hope this helps...
BTW I loved them. They sounded great wide open, but you could drive on the freeway in the closed position and still hear the stereo and carry on a conversation!

I have them but have not installed them yet, I got the full sys. used.

My brother-in-law also has them on his 1986, he loves them. Great sound. And little resonation when I rode with him.

Did you notice a big performance difference with the corsa and K&N ?

My PE catback is on order until they are up and running again, I have heard them on several cars and loved the sound. In the closed position they aren't insanely loud for hwy driving.

Honestly, not so's you'd notice. Sounds faster though.:D I'm sure there is some hp/torque gain, but, in the absence of a timing slip or dyno run I'd rather not guess.

Thanks Froggy, Ive been wondering about that combo for awhile, I had some big plans for some modifications this winter but one thing led to another and they got put on the back burner but that was the main part of the plan, corsa and the k&n, I was also going to do a 52mm TB but I had heard if you dont port the inside of the manifold, that doesnt make enough difference either. Thanks again for the reply and answering my question

Thats Right vader86!:upthumbs
We drove from Rapid City, SD to Orange County, California and back. I even left them open in #2 position on the way back. Later the same year "2002" we went from Rapid City, SD to Florida. Guess what? We can both still hear. (Well when I want to hear her):L

CKA RACING did something like that w/ his LT4 Collector Ed. Hopefully he will chime in as I know he saved BIG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ :upthumbs

Here is my usual response:
Before I go on, I'd like to give you some advice. Go to as many vette shows/events and listen to the different exhaust sound first hand. Also take a ride in these vettes if you can to check for resonance. Make sure you ask if any other exhaust mods were done such as headers, cats removed, etc. These mods affect how much resonance there is. From there decide on which look you prefer and also how much you are willing to spend. Also ask yourself what benefits are important to you from the exhaust mods. What's more important? More power? Just a nice sound?
Least costly?

I will make comments on sound and looks. Keep in mind this is based on personal choice. The other comments are base on my five years of reading forum comments, magazine article and personal experience.

Since you mention Borla, I'll start there. This system has been very well known for bad resonance. Wimpy tailpipes for an after market system. Nice finish. Fair price. Sound is ok. Fit is not always the greatest.

Corsa - Practically no resonance at all. Fair price. Good quality. Decent tailpipes. Ugly welds show too much. Sound is ok but not deep enough. Too quite at idle. Excellent fit.

Power Effects - Excellent quality. Nice deep big block sound. Excellent finish. Excellent fit. Have adjustable flaps in the mufflers that can be used to adjust the backpressure and loudness. It also helps in dealing with the resonance. With closed flaps there is a tiny bit of resonance at around 2,000rpm. This cat back is 2 3/4 inch which ideal for torq and horsepower for a streetcar. You can install the L98 part# on a LT4 using the factory LT4 resonator. Cut about ten inches from the stock resonator and the L98 Y-pipes slips right on snuggly.
This saves you from spending the $400+ they want for the PE resonator section. So this system cost me $835 four years ago.

B&B Triflow - The best-looking tailpipes around. Excellent quality. There have been issues with fit. Mufflers spinning, not the easiest to install. Comes in 3-inch pipe. The system has resonance.

Flowmaster - Not one of the best-looking mufflers out there for a vette. For some it's just fine and serves there needs just fine. Finish is not as good as the others. Has resonance.

MagnaFlow - Nice tailpipes. Has resonance.

Dynomax - Sound is ok but not loud enough for most. Cheap in price. Lousy tailpipes.

The following info was taken from an article in Corvette Fever June 1998 issue.
Exhaust shoot out! By Jim Van Dorn
Dyno results on stock Grand Sport LT4.

HP/TORQ
Stock:
299/307

BB Triflow catback 3-inch:
310/310

Dynomax mufflers only:
304/310

Borla Corvette Challenge cat back 2 3/4 inch:
304/309

Flowmaster cat back 2 1/2 inch:
306/309

Power Effects cat back 2 3/4 inch:
299/308 - flaps in closed position
311/313 - flaps in open position

As you can see the is very little difference between them all especially when you consider cost.

Some interesting comments they had were, "Borla teamed with Doug Rippie Motosports in developing their Corvette Challenge cat-back 2 3/4 inch system. Rippie's original request for the larger-diameter pipe was made when he fitted his mega-horsepower former Lemans engine (600+hp) to a production ZR-1. Rippie later related, "We found the 3-inch system was great for horsepower, but (it) lost torque. The 2 3/4 inch system was the best of both worlds.

I have an issue with the above. If that's true why is it the Triflow 3-inch tested pushed 310 torq and the Borla pushed 309torq. Could it be that they are really referring to how the max torq moves to a lower rpm with the 2 3/4 and moves up higher in the rpm's for the 3-inch? Is this possible?
I can feel a difference in low-end torq if I closed the flaps on my PE system. Feels like it has more but maybe it's just available sooner.

They also tested sound levels at 70mph cruise, at idle, interior sound. Let me know if this interest anyone and I’ll start a new post with the results. What's interesting is that they don't mention resonance at all. I'm thinking the Cruise @70mph sound level test would be as good indication of how loud the resonance is.
Stock 94
Triflow 107
Dynomax 96
Borla 100
Flowmaster 97
Power Effects 100(Closed) 103(Open)<this turns it into a straight pipe, you can see inside the exhaust.

107 DB is loud for most folks.
For me open headers use to be not loud enough.

So bigger is better for horsepower in a modified car I would think. When you have such a high level of power I don't think it makes much difference if you lose let's say 10-20ft pounds of torq for a streetcar.

so you can buy the L98 part number, cut the stock pipes 10 inches from the resonator, slip on the PE's, your done.
Cheaper than buying the PE resonator which is not going to gave you anything at all in regards to power and sound.

Same here, I have the SideEffects on order for this summer.

Does anyone have a sound file for them at idle or revving like GusVette's PowerEffects? I want to get a better feel of the sound other than the crap-file they have on their website.

Power Effects

I do have the power effects on my "94". The downside to the system is it does have resonence. Joe ( I think this is his name) at PE warned me about it several times before I purchased the system. I always drive with the system open, you never know when you'll meet up with a challange on the road, and who has the time to stop the car and open the exhaust. I have only closed them twice in the 2 years I've had the system. One of the benifites of the system is that it is a 2 3/4 in system. You'll want to either buy the whole cat back from them, or if you want just the casules, you'll want to replace from the cats back with 2 3/4" pipe, with an X pipe installed.

I will say that the stuff is quality, I have the black powder coated tips, which look nice. The assembly was fairly easy, a couple of hours for 2 people with a lift, or the better part of a day for 2 if your on jack stands.

Would I buy them again? Probably not. They cost quite a bot more than the Borla, which did not offer a 2 3/4" system when I purchased mine, but they do now. But as stated above, this is really a personal choice situation.

Good luck

I have pe on my lt4 it came with them.I like them closed but occasionlly get the mood and run them open it is nice to have this option.Thre is resonance and the pass. side rattles when closed sending them in for repair tomorrow.I would definately have them again! Thanks Kevin

Considering getting the PE capsules (mufflers) but if you run with them open most of the time, why not just get muffler eliminators and save a ton of $$$?
Would not the result be the same plus you would save alot of weight.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I am not exactly sure about this but the diameter of the pipe used for the power effects exhaust may be larger than that of the stock system. Also the resonator is almost entirely hollow for the power effects and with not catalytic converters it is very low resistance. I personally cant wait to hear what it sounds like with long tubes and a nice lumpy cam. I've always wanted to go to a multilevel parking garage and set off all of the alarms...:D

Pe

Power effects uses 2 3/4" pipe, stock is 2 1/2. It should sound real nice with long tube headers. I run mine with shorties, as that's all that's allowed in CA.

On a LT4, the stock pipe is 2 3/4". I cut the stock exhaust at the rear side of the stock resonator and slide the PE Y-pipe right over it. It's a tight fit, I had to hammer it some to get it to slide.

I set off car alarms all the time in the multi level Metro parking garage by me.
I have a stock exhaust with only the PE Y-pipe and capsules. The PE resonator is too much money for what it is. Might as well install an X-pipe, it's a lot cheaper.
