So you guys going to Napa and AutoZone to get a fan clutch for @ $40 - got a part number? I need one, called the Napa and the Zone only to get a "good luck finding that".

Note: I think the thermostat causes the clutch in this fan to lock up a few degrees higher than the original.

Mark, you need to concentrate on your own '65 to get to carlisle, not deal with my newbie minor problems. I want to hear that monster 502 roar Sweet Thunder music as you drive onto the field at Carlisle :beer

Thanks Barry...Your problems help me forget mine... I'm cool ..:beer

cool? in this heat and humidity?
damn, you're getting too much of the cool Ocean Air.

;LOL ;LOL

Remember to look at the thin washer under the edges of the cap-the outer sealing ring, so to speak. Original caps had brass, I believe. Cracks can be deceptive-radiator shops will have a cap tester. Worth a shot-just to confirm.

OK, I'm going to go slink into the back of the room now and sit in the corner...........walking away with my head hung low .................
SORRY EVERYONE (said very sheepishly).......... just picked up my new IR temp gun and let the car warm up and took a bunch of measurements.
with the dash guage showing 180* the IR gun registered a range of 115*-129* as i kept shooting it (car was still warming up)
when the dash gauge showed 200* the IR gun showed 169*
dash gauage showed 215* IR gun showed 185*

i let it keep sitting and idling to make sure it was fully warmed up and the dash gauge stayed at approx 215* and the IR temp gun kept showing temp ranged between 185*-189*

looks like I was chasing my tail on this problem it it's the temp sender unit afterall.
I'm REALLY sorry to have wasted everyone's time on this when the problem wasn't really a problem, just a poor quality temp sender unit.

I'll just slink away quietly now with my tail between my legs...........

The freespining on the fan after shutting the car down still has me concerned since Ray brought it to my attention so I'm still getting a new fan clutch to replace the current one - the NAPA store will have it for me in another hour or so and they are getting in a vacuum gauge for me at the same time.

Well, I;m glad you all helped me to find the problem, I'm just sorry it turned out to be such a big deal and such a big thread over such a stupid thing!

No worries, Barry-knowledge is a good thing. I'm sure others may have gained something from this. In fact, an IR gun is on my list of a handy tool I should have-you just helped me to confirm it. :)

It's all good...

Cool news... congrats

That's the cool thing.. if someone ELSE has the same problem.. and does a search.. they would benefit from ALL this good input.. so not time wasted.. thought in progress... and it's all here.

SO.. I'll bet the following.. get a NEW SENDER.. and your troubles will be over.

Thanks for the welcome's guys.. I'll be lurking.

the end.

next thread Barry?

Hey, in all seriosuness, this is the same exact drill that MANY have gone through, and in that camp are folks who are competent mechanics. (You might wonder why so many of us now own IR guns? :D )

Consider this drill akin to loosing your mechanic-virignity. You're in the club.

Barry as John suggest to me in the past.. A TU5 Wells sender seems to work correctly in my car and lots of others have reported the same. I got mine at AutoZone for 5 bucks.. The one I got from CarQuest and NAPA would read extremely high as you have seen... Dave..

yes, but still, so much input and help from everyone and so much time and energy from everyone trying to help that turns out to be such a stupid thing....

yes, well at aleast maybe others will benefit later on - I really hope so with all the time and trouble everyone went thru for this

I may just leave the current sender in - who's to say a new one will be any better?

Dave, it's a Wells TU5 that is in there - it's what I put in last summer and the unit that gave us all this trouble!
go figure!

It was a great learning exercise for many of us following your thread Barry. It really showed that there is a logical way to approach these things and solve the problem by systematically checking each possibility. More than one person learned something here and it really got everyone thinking so that isn't a waste of time at all and look at the new members who get a taste of what CAC support is! All around I think the thread did it's job pretty good don't you? How many times have we heard of a garage just replacing part after part until the problem is fixed....at our expense of course! Thanks for posting the question.

yes, i understand and agree Doug, it's a shame my threads always seem to end up running into page after page, after page, after page...........
;LOL

well, if someone else benefits from this in future searches than i was worth it i guess.

Again to everyone............ Thank you!! :)

Glad it wasn't anything more serious. I too, think you should get the fan clutch, even if it's for peace of mind. The clutch symtoms you described are indicitive of one that's not working as it should anymore.

The IR gun is fun. You'll be checking the temps of everything in the house next.:L

Paul

already picked up the fan clutch 10 minutes ago along with a vacuum gauge. :)

Yep, already been going around the house with the IR gun taking temp readings of everything. Our Border Collie's head reads 83* but his back is only 79* ;LOL
