1967 coupe, 1979 bought new.
I have a 67 L-79 car, and am looking for original date heads. The block is cast F 6 7. HT block. It lost its original heads some time in its life. Vette books show 462 heads as being the correct castings. Chevrolet by the numbers shows 291 Heads being used in late 67 production (March/April). I found a set of 291 Heads with late May dates. What would be correct? 462 or 291??? Thanks for the help. Kurt

NCRS spec guide says 462 heads (only) are correct for L-79. There was an overlap in production dates of the 2 heads, so the 291's may have been in use by Chevy (on other models), but I believe the NCRS book (mine is dated 1997; by John Amgwert) would have picked up on any use in 67 Corvettes.

Kurt,

I have an original 67/L-79 that was built March 15th. The right cylinder head is 3890462 GM 28 B10 7 and the left is 3890462 GM 23 B9 7.

Hope this helps...

The pocket spec guide (even the latest 2004 edition) is out of date/incorrect on this issue. The new 4th Edition '67 TM&JG has it correct - "The correct cylinder head casting number is 3890462 for all cars except very late, which is casting number 3917291".

My all-original late '67 (June 8th final assembly date) has the block dated E 25 7, 291 heads dated E 23 7, engine assembly V0601HE. I've seen 291 heads dated early April on original cars.

JOHNZ, Thanks for the info... It would seem Chevy would use the 291 heads as they came into production (march/april) on the Vette. I have found a set of 291 heads with a cast date of E-29-7. Your car gives me great info.. My car was 121392 built. Engine V0620HT, cast F-6-7. May 29th heads would be 9 days away from the block casting. Your car is proof, the book may be wrong...What do you think??? Thanks, Kurt

Are you sure about the V0620 on the pad, and is your VIN on the pad (7121392)? What is the body build date code on your trim tag, and is it an "S" or "A" body number on the trim tag?

The "Birthday Book" shows your car as having come off the line at St. Louis on June 21st (which would put it in Chassis with its engine on June 20th). Mine is 120401, produced on June 8th.

JohnZ. Yes, the stamp says V0620HT and 7121392. K07 is the body build date, and A2183. Smith body.. I figured the final assy as 6/21 or 6/22. Flint must have shipped the engine to St Louis and was installed the next day. I guess that is what the factory calls "Just in time delivery". Kurt
