I have found a solution for the sloppy rear sound of the rear speakers. Of course, this is BLASPHEMY because its not the stock, GM-blessed-by-the-hand-Zora "look" ..... but it serves its purpose well.

Remove the factory speaker and assembly (if the previous owner hasn't done so already). Now, purchase a 6x9 speaker enclosure and remove the the bottom corner as picured in the attachment- it wil fit perfectly over the factory speaker location and only protrude four inches out. You want to have the wires enter through the side that butts up to the carpet so as to conceal the wires. You can drill through the enslosure and use the original speaker mounts (threaded self-retaining clips). The sound quality is phenominal compared to the original. Additionally, it will give you the clarity provided by the enclosure without mounting any clunky floor mounted boxes.

Oh-

Here is the actual picture of the speakers!!!

i made a box very close to what you have here , but mine is 1 pc of wood wrapped with a black (interior color)material (kind of fuzzy) and a hole in the middle for the dome light.then the 2 speaker boxes attach to it , in the same location as you show here. it sounds great with the cd player i also installed. i did have to cut the bezel of it , but at about $100 to replace it back to factory i couldnt make an argument for buying the $800 system that fits the bezel w/out mods.i have a sony explode stereo and speakers. my car will never be judged by somebody with a clipboard anyway.
i'm thinking of installing a sub from crutchfield that is in the shape of a tube with the amp built in. it will mount above the dome light to the board i made.then i dont have to worry about where to put the amp for the sub.i'm having trouble finding 4" speakers that will go in the kick panels. i have pioneer 4" in the dash , but would like to bring some sound to the lower end. the pioneer speakers dont fit the holes that exist , so im in the hunt for a diffrent 4". the factory 4" that was in the dash do fit , so i have something to go buy for comparison.i did alot of home work before i decided to go the cheaper route. i did have to custom make a face plate for the radio , and i have a mill a my disposal, so it was easy to make that.the t-tops fit under the speakers and they are very hard to see from the little thiefs that want to take, what is going to get them cheerfully beaten to a bloody pulp if they get caught by me!

im very happy with the system thus far.rock on!:_rock

That looks pretty good, man! I have chosen a less-stealthy approach. I have designs that will allow me to add dual 5 1/4" component speakers in the door panels and a pair of 8" woofers along a false rear wall. This will allow for big sound while keeping room for my T-tops. By the way, the original owner of my car removed the factory rears and added Jensen speakers! :puke Again, yours look great.

Darkshark78 I envy the room you have for your speakers.I,m trying to figure out how best to place rear speakers in my 68 Roadster especially when the top is down :(

I'm looking into a speaker solution as well...Here's a wild idea, dunno if it could be done, but maybe you could get those tiny Bose cube speakers wired in somehow, I've also seen lots of other micro home speakers for less $$ Dunno what you'd use for a sub though...

You could probably use those, but you'd have to wire it so the impedance is correct. You'd still have to fab a mounting plate though.

Sub placement is difficult if you plan on keeping room for the tops. I suppose you could hang a dual 8" or 6" box off the rear deck, and the t-tops would slide underneath...hmmm.... :confused

That's pretty nice looking. Are those custom fab boxes, or just front faces, open-air backs?

Front and top fabed peices as I used the back of the car as the rest of the box. I used 1/4 in. plywood covered with black carpet from walmart and that way I can use any 6x9 speaker without having to fight with a slim fit speaker. It's mounted to the rear metal part of the rear curtain pully thingy:Silly The only hard part was getting it cut out around the wheel well so I used a piece of cardboard untill I got it almost right. Doesn't have to be perfect cause the carpet folded around it makes up for some of the mistakes and makes for a clean install. Try it you'll be amazed how much different it looks.

81C3. The speakers in the corner are very well done. I wanted to do that as well but didn't have any idea on how to get the measurements. I'll remember the trick with the cardboard.

Great Job SLICKMAN
Ours are pretty close to the same.
I installed a removable 12" Bazooka Tube for some extra bass and put an on/off switch and volume knob where the ash trey used to be. It doesn't wake up the neighboorhood but it's perfect for me.

Only problem with that is it's either subwoofer, or not removing the tops once you're on the road... That's why I don't have a sub anymore. (Plus, I like the sound of my car, so why bother with a nice stero installation :L )

On my 76, (before it was totalled by a hit and run driver) I did a custom install too.

I actually build a sub into the passenger side storage compartment. I fabricated a MDF (medium density fiberboard) box based on a cardboard template that I made. I cut out the top of the lid for a 10" sub and fiberglassed the whole thing inside and out. I mounted the grill on top after painting it to match the trim pieces. I also mounted a board along the back wall which held the two amps and the 6 1/2" speakers. I made custom kick panels out of fiberglass to hold 5 1/4" component speakers too. :)

I have photos that I will post as soon as I get a new place to host them. My old host is probably not going to like my linking to them from here. ;);)

I have (2) 10" subwoofers in a custom built box in the center of my storage compartment. When I want to take the tops off I put them in their leather bags, and one slides in on either side of the box.:D
