Help! Rebuilding Clutch Cross Shaft

Anyone ever done this? What's involved, how long. . .how hard.

my cross shaft moves about an inch left and right over the ball joints. Looks like the spring is broken.

However, before I take it off the car to rebuild. . .I had a question. How do I "correctly" remove the clips that are holding the linkage shafts to the cross shaft. They are clips like I've never seen before.

Those are "pretzel" clips - just pull them straight off.

Ok, how do you get them back on? Do I need to bend a portion to get it on?
