Replace both head gaskets or just the leaky one?

Dawn,

You should get the Hanes service manual. I bought mine cheap at my local Pep Boys and they do a pretty decent job of outlining how to put things back together with your L98 cylinder heads. It's not as complete as the factory service manual but it has helped me a great deal 90% of the time while wrenching under the hood of my '91.

BTW, I think you asked earlier....use anti-sieze on your new bolt threads when you put them back together. Again, it comes in a nice squeeze container from my local Pep Boys. Wish I could be in Tucson to help you. I would love to learn a few things on doing all this heavy duty stuff on a Chevy V8.

Nearly had to call on you for help

The GMC motorhome has had a slow coolant leak since I bought it in August. There are miles of plumbing to the water heater and cabin heaters and I never could find any witness marks. It only leaked about a liter every thousand miles so I did not worry much.

Yesterday I saw a bit of green stuff by the water pump so I probed around and found a loose bolt. Tightened it up, cleaned up all of the coolant, started the engine and saw no more green stuff. GREAT:=))

1 mile east of Wagon Wheel NM on I40 a car wash size spray came out of the grill. The waterpump was leaking from everywhere.

Discovered that whoever rebuilt the engine left all of the bolts on the waterpump hand tight, the gasket was totally compromised. Tightening up that one bolt must have forced more pressure to build up all around the gasket.

To remove the waterpump on the beast the powersteering pump, AC brackets and fan shroud bracket must be removed first.

6 hours later it is all back together but I do not want to head out in the dark so here I am standing on a corner but it ain't in Winslow AZ.

I repaired the beast across the street from the only restaurant in town so I washed up and went for dinner.

WRONG!! They roll the streets up at 7PM:-(((

The people here are great, friendly and helpful.

Fun an adventure never ends when you travel in 35 year old GMs.

SpanishVette, enjoy your little road trip across the Western USA. It's the stuff I dream of but never get the time to do. I will someday....but I plan to take the Corvette!
