Original battery (99) is dead. Was going to replace with an Optima Red Top as has been suggested in earlier forums, but a local NAPA specialist said his NAPA Orbital is the same. Any truth to this?

I've had a Red Top for 2 years and it's worked great! No problems starting when the car has sit for a couple of weeks but many people will tell you about all the problems they've had with them.

nistaf: 1st of all welcome to CAC. This is the place to be for this type of info. I don't know about the red top battery. However, I just replaced the original battery in our 03 with a Chevy recommended Delco. 5 year guarantee
and was ;) $60. If it lasts about 4 1/2 years as the original did; thats about $13 a year. Not bad.

Nistaf,
I must admit, I have never heard of a "NAPA Orbital" type battery. When I did a Google Search, the results described it at "NAPA/Exide Orbital." How similar it is to an Optima, I don't know.

And I guess in light of that lack of certainty, I'd stick with the Optima.

I have the Exide in mine. It seems to perform well.

I am going to replace my battery and was wondering if there is any need for a memory saver? I found one you plug into the lighter.

I go with Sears Die-Hard Gold in everything. Just a quick tid-bit. When we played with Jeeps in the past, a group of us were out in a snow storm off-roading, miles from pavement, I slid of the trail into some thicket which popped up in engine compartment, shredded all the belts, I drove back home approx. 15 miles on the battery, w/lights, wipers, occasional heater, and no power steering, got up the next morn. for work, the CJ-5 started right up, drove it to work, fixed it that evening. Since then I go with the D/H. The 99 I just bought had a Optima Redtop that was a year old and I had I checked because the car wouldn't start, it had somekind of fault which made it garbage. The warranty did not apply to me.

Go with a gel cell battery or glass mat battery, your main wiring harness is below your battery. Battery fluid and wiring harnesses/computers do not mix. I went with a yellow top. I also used a memory saver, when I replaced my battery.

BTW the Delco's used to leak.

Same question - when you replace a battery do you lose all memory? Does replacement cause any other problems?

My wife got me a memory saver for christmas. It's the kind you plug in the cig lighter too. Haven't tried it out yet, but seems like for $20. it's something we all should have.

I put one of those napa batteries on my 02. Worked fine. The napa battery actually has a few more cold cranking amps and a lower price. Can't beat that. Never had a problem after I put it in.

:werd: don't use any "wet" battery

NAPA vs. Optima

The NAPA is the same technology as the Optima. I have a NAPA Orbital in my '66 and it works great. No liquid to leak w/great cranking amperage. The Optima or the NAPA would be fine. I would go with the best price.
