I did a search and found that a 6x9 speakers hould fit in the rear. However what size speaker do I need for the front door speakers. I have an 86 vert. I have a pioneer CD player in the car now, my thinking is that I can remove the amp and original speaker and just wire in a new speaker. Does this make sense?
Okay I am pretty sure the 6x9's will fit in the rear. I have not taken the front speaker grills off, does anyone know what size speakers are there:confused
Well for anyone that cares, I found that the speakers are 3" from the mid america magazine. However I will have to take the cover off and see what I am working with.
Sorry I didnt' see this before. I just had a new Pioneer h/u and Infinite speakers installed in my '87. 6x9's will fit nicely in the rear compartments after you remove the amps/speakers. We put 5" rounds in the front. Removed the speakers and cut the amp boxs to accept the new speakers. You can still use your stock grills; here's a couple pictures ...
Heh, purists may shudder but I gutted my Bose door speaker boxes and put a new "face" on them and then cut a 6.5" hole and was able to mount 6.5" Infinity speakers in the doors. They sound fantastic, best mod I ever did to my car. And the best part is that I didn't have to fabricate speaker boxes for the door, I just used the stock boxes, with a little help from a Dremel and some fiberglassing.
Did you guys use the stock wiring. I know there are two wires for the speaker, and am amp turn on wire. So did you just tape the amp wire, and run the original speaker wires to the new speakers? I already have a new head unit, it souned good for a while, but I think it is time for a change.
When I replaced the stock Bose system I removed the Bose boxes in the doors and made a speaker box out of MDF and used 61/2" speakers. You will need to angle the box for the speakers to clear the window regulator and the stock speaker cover. In the rear you will be able to remove the Bose boxes and the rear plates have a bolt pattern that will except a 6x9 speaker. I pulled all new wiring to the speakers and left the stock wiring alone. I had to add an amp after the original install because my head unit did not have enough power for top down cruisin. BTW the HU is a Pioneer DEH-8500. I can take some pictures of the final install and e-mail them to you. Hope this helps. Tim
What is the reason for adding new wiring. IF the old is there why not use it? What kind of job is it to run new wiring? I dont want to make this into a big production, so could I put a smaller speaker in there with no modification for the doors?
When I first asked the question about putting a new stereo in without doing an mods to the doors, I was told you could buy an 3.5" to 4" adaptor and 4" speakers in the doors. Didn't really look into it.
As far as running new wires goes, I just figured what the heck. I was putting in anew h/u and speakers, might as well run new wires.

The reason I ran new wires is that I did not want to cut into the original harness. Also the Bose wiring is a smaller gauge wire than I wanted to use. The bose amps are in the boxes on our year and the wires that run from the head unit to the speaker boxes only carry a low level signal to the speaker box and that signal is amplified in the speaker box. Doing this will allow the stock stereo to be put back in with out modifing the the harness. I have heard other people using 4" speakers in the Bose box but I think you have to open up the box to hold the 4" speakers and also use an adaptor to reduce the signal to the amp in the box. I wanted to be able to return it to stock if needed. With my install the only way you know it is not stock is because of the head unit. Tim
It is not hard to rewire. The worst part is pulling in the new wire to the doors. Just use a coat hanger to fish throught the channel that goes from under the dash to the door. Then use the coat hanger to pull the new wire in. Hope this helps. Tim
When I had my system installed in my 91, they were able to put 6x9 in the rear and 6.5's in the front. The sound is so much better than the stock Bose speakers (not hard to do!!). They also ran all new speaker wire from the HU to the amp and then to the speakers. As others stated, aftermarket speaker wire is normally bigger than the tiny stock stuff. IMO, it's also a good way to fully bypass the stock system should you want to keep it there for resale issues.
The only thing I have left to do is get the car back there so they can install an iPod adapter.
the wires that run from the head unit to the speaker boxes only carry a low level signal to the speaker box and that signal is amplified in the speaker box.
Along these lines..... If the electrical current driving the magnets pushing the cones in those speakers is thought of as water, think how much more water goes through a firehose than through a soda straw.
I am curious to know what guage wire you replaced it with?
I understand tha analogy whalepirot, but we aren't talking about a change on the magnitude of a firehose and a straw. If that much of a change was necessary, those wires wouldn't fit obviously.
I am not sure what guage wire is currently there. Looks like I will be getting the DMM out next weekend.
ABC warehouse has pioneer 6x9's on sale for 19 bucks for the pair. What do you all think?????
No need to get the DMM out its not that technical. The Gauge wire I used was a 14 gauge speaker wire that u can pick up anywhere. In a way if you go with a very large amp you kind of are talking about fire hose size. I can get into more detail if you want.
Well I have a 600 watt 4 channel amp that is feeding the speakers. If you divide watts by volts you get amps. 150watts divided by 12volts = 12.5 amps this is for each channel. A 14 ga wire is rated for about 20 amps. You also need to consider that this is on a 12 volt system so you need to run a little larger size wire to compensate for resistance. Hope this helps. Tim
I am not running any where near that kind of power. I am just going to push the speakers with the head unit. The pioneer I have is 50 x 4. So I should be okay with 16 or 18 guage. That is peak, average is 25 watts.
