Guys:
Anyone remove just their resonator from the stock LT1/LT4 Exhaust. I understand it really improves the sound quality a bit. Just a Tad Louder. Is this True?
Thanx

The exhaust will get louder and where in the rpm range it's loud may change as well. If you remove the resonator but do not add an H or X pipe, the quality of the sound will change quite a bit.

Sound quality is so subjectitve, about all I can say is some people aren't going to like the sound of a C4 with no resonator and a split dual exhaust. On the other hand, the change in sound will be distinctive and, admittedly, one reason people change exhaust to make it louder or different-sounding is to gain a distinctive noise.

Thanx Hib...In your Opinion..What would be best an "H" or an "X" Pipe?

And does the resonator have Fiberglass Packing or Baffles?

I removed the resonator on my 93 and just had straight pipes put in no H or X configurations. It has a mellow sound that I get a lot of compliments on.

If you install an x-pipe (I like the Magnaflow) in place of the resonator, you will have a smoother sounding exhaust and some extra ponies. This is due to the scavenging effect of the x-pipe. The exhaust gases are pulled through the x-pipe because of the pulsing of the exhaust. Similar to a turbocharger in the fact that the power increase is a byproduct of the engine and his theoretically FREE!

I did that to mine. I did more than that, actually, but that is another story for another time.

A very experienced exhaust man advised me on installing the x-pipe. I have to say he was right!

AFTER INSTALLING YOUR X-PIPE, DON'T FORGET TO SAVE THE :w!

You have the stock Mufflers I take it?
Yes I do and LT4Man has heard what it sounds like. As for his LT4 what he has for an exhaust system is just right in my book it is loud enough to say performance without raising the dead from the graveyard. As for the reason I did not put in an X or H pipe it was economics. I had the straight pieces
put in for $80.00. There is some rumble at road speed but it does not interfere with the radio but when I get on it you know it.

I removed my resonator and did not put back in an x or H pipe, there is a little bit of resonation drone around 17-1800 rpm's but it's not bad, LT4man has heard mine also and might be able to describe it some for you...it's a little more of a soft rumble to it at idle and normal easy driving, roars when you open it up all the way. I've also got flowmasters on it, not stock mufflers. I love the sound I ended up with and get quite a few compliments on it.

As has been said too though, exhaust sound is something that simply depends on what you prefer yourself.

I have muffler eliminators on my 93 Coupe, and soon it will have an x-pipe in place of the resonator. Sounds fantastic with resonator still in place, but I expect a even better sound without it. I love it at idle is loud enough to hear but not too loud. Not to bad at all below 2000 rpm for around town driving. I cant get enough of winding it out on country roads. The sound is nothing short of glorious. Personally, I see no need for a "engineered sound" like flowmaster, etc...just let that small block sing the song that it is supposed to sing. My question is do you think removing the resonator will make it a LOT louder or just a little???

Your resonator is a pretty good sized muffler. If I remember correctly (don't quote me on this!) almost 24" long.

I would think it would make it louder than it is now. With an X-pipe in place, the sound will smooth out and will be a little muffled.

All you can do is try it and see if you like it.

SAVE THE :w!

I think I'll try it. The Best Sounding Exhaust I ever heard (for my taste of course) was my 84' with gutted cats and LT1 Stock Mufflers. Really got alot of compliments on it.Not too loud and NO Drone. That's what I'm after.
