I should finally be able to order my new transmission this week. Going with the Richmond 5 speed for my '79. I found a place where I can but the whole set up, Transmission with 26 spline input, 11" RAM clutch and RAM disk, throwout bearing, and 168 tooth flywheel. Does this sound like a good setup or do I need some different componants? I'm not sure that this is the tranmission input/clutch/flywheel I should be using. Any input would be appreciated.

If it matters I'm going from my 3.70 gears to 3.08's in back. Should give approximately the same 1st four gears and an effective overdrive.

Also, what do I need to do about the speedo gear? I know Eckler's sells them but are they universal between all transmissions? I've never done a tranny swap before so could use a few pointers.

Sounds like a great Idea Bob.
Can I ask?? What made you decide on the Richmond 5 Speed, and Not The 6 Speed?
Tom

BOB, I should let you Know, I have the Richmond 6sp. in my car ,and just realized I dont know any of the specs for the 5 sp??
So cant help you there..
Tom

Groovyjay did the ROD Five in his project car.

I thought the ROD five only had a better first, and no overdrive????

I am deep in the middle of the six swap. Don't have an opinion yet. I do know the six is nearly $1,000 more when all is said and done than the five speed.

You can use the same clutch on the six as the five, as on your stock trans.

The 5 speed does have a lower first, which is why I'm also switching out rear end gears. I'm doing the 5 speed instead of 6 because I've read in 3 or 4 places thaqt there are less modifications required. The extra $1000 will also pay for my new suspension setup (or most of it if I go with the front monospring).

Good luck with the swap Bob, Keep us posted with how it goes, and with the front Monospring too. I May convert to a front Monospring in the future, especially if there was some significant advantages?
Tom

I did the 5 speed Richmond conversion on my 79. My car used to be automatic, so I have the removable cross member, no biggie in my case, since I already had the body off the frame. BUt any way, I have the Road Race version. What gears you have in your transmission? I never wanted a 1/4 mile car, but a fast road course racer, so I went with 2,73 final gear. Should be good for those 200mph runs. I've only driven the car once with the transmission in place, I must say it is rock crusher, the shifts are very accurate. The actaul tranny swap was quite easy, I only had to make a billet transmission bracket, you could use the stock 4 speed bracket, but I just happen to like the polished aluminum better :)

I try to find some pics of the install asap.

FYI I paid 1300$ for the transmission (new), and I'm using Lakewood bellhousing, Center force dual friction clutch...

I was planning on getting the tranny from Scoggin-Dickey. They have it for just under $1800. I may have to keep looking though since sg01fc said he got one for $1300. Looking around I didn't think $1800 was a bad price. I hope to be ordering it soon but my plans may be changing a bit due to my possible upcoming divorce. We're still trying to work things out but it's not looking good right now. I may have to put the whole car project on hold for a while. Thanks for the links on the installation by the way. I'm sure they'll help a lot.
