which roller rockers

need some advice on rollers for my `90 l98. which 1.6 rockers should i buy? thanks. the car does have some mods, cam ect......
 
iv posted already and got no response on this subject. im really looking for advice as im going to make the roller rocker purchase next week. what do yall use if you have them and what are the pros and cons. thanks. `90 l98.
 
Sorry, I did not see your post before.;shrug

I have never had a stock L98 so I can not tell you how much difference it makes. My engine Guru will not build any engine with conventional rockers. He talks about a 5% loss due to friction. (Frankie’s words, not mine.)

If you spend the $$$ get true rollers, not the ones that just have the roller tips. (Frankie again, I don’t know what I am talking about.)

Some roller rockers will not fit under the stock valve covers.

Rebuild the heads. Like so many things to do to the heads to use the 1.6 rockers.
Might as well just rebuid the heads. Thought the 1.6's were a strait bolt on, for a little more HP?

are the 1.6 not a direct bolt on? if not then im going to have to wait on that up grade. yea if i have to pull the heads they will not be going back on.
 
i'de check your valve springs before putting on a new set of 1.6 true roller rockers just to make sure they are inline.

I run Comp Pro Magnum 1.6 true roller rockers. They are beautiful!
 
how much money

the valve springs on my are new and stiffer because of the cam we put in it a few months ago. so maybe no problem there. how much should i expect to spend on the parts?
 
I do not see how the rollers will give you much, except friction losses.

The real value, IMHO, is they allow steeper ramps on the camshaft lobes, which allows more valve-open time, effectively a more aggressive camshaft, yet more conservative versus a non-roller with the same lift and duration.

The recommendation for proper springs is valid, despite your replacement with stiffer. The best choice whould have been to buy a camshaft, springs and roller setup, all designed to work together. The springs can only push so hard on any valve train; the lower friction of a roller allows stiffer springs, which close the valves faster, as the lobe ramps allow.

Be careful about your total valve train geometry. WIll you have enough valve/piston clearance with your new cam and longer rockers? Will your springs handle that longer travel at high RPM?

I do, BTW, understand budgets and stepwise performance.
 
proble going to wait on the rockers. i just now got the super ram base ( intake) on and torqued down. still got to do the runners and the top, as well my headers are at the shop being ceramic coated still got to put them on. im also making my own smog pump eliminator pully. after getting over the sticker shock for the one out mid america, decided to try my own. when and if it turns out i will try to post the pics.
 
There are, really, two issues here: 1.6 rocker ratio vs. the stock 1.s and rollerized rocker arms.

In most cases, changing from 1.5:1 arms to 1.6:1 arms will cause a slight performance increase. On an L98 it might be as much as 12hp.

A switch to roller rockers (and by "roller rockers" I mean rocker arms with both roller fulcum and roller tip) results in a useful decrease in friction on with engines that frequently see engine speeds above 5500 rpm. Below that, the friction decrease is not enough to warrant the expense.

A rollerized tip has another advantage and that is reduced side loading on the valve stem because the tip of the arm rolls across the end of the valve rather than rubbing across it.

On low rpm engines, I typically use 1.6:1 rockers with roller tips because they are less expensive. On engines that see rpm past 5500 or 6000, I'd run full, rollerized arms.

I have two engines with roller rockers. One is a small block with a set of 1.6:1, Crane gold rockers. The other is a BB with a set of 1.75:1 Edelbrock "Red Rockers" which, unfortunately, are no longer made.
 
Just FYI, I'm going to have a set of stamped-steel roller-tip rocker arms for sale in about a month or so. They're a split ratio (1.52/1.6) and made by Cal Auto Transpeed (a race-parts company). I'm looking for about $50 for the set; they have about 5k miles on them. I'm going to full 1.6 rollers because that's what Lingenfelter wants with the cam I'm installing.

ld85 you are right about the agressiv e cam lobes.

I run a 224/230 custom grind cam on a 112lsa with well over .500" lift. Somewhere near the cam in your 406c.i.", but mine is a 357c.i." Two different monsters!
