Search for Donaldson Blackwing

In another thread, I asked about air filters for my 1999 coupe to add a little more horsepower and I have basically settled on the Donaldson Blackwing as the most return for the money and the easiest to carry on a long-haul plane when I'm packing three weeks worth of other luggage and a lady friend across 13,000 miles of sea each way! There might be other opinions, but I think it's a bit subjective when there are few other things you're going to do to the engine, exhaust, etc.

Also, from pictures on the Forum ('Installing the Blackwing' thread) they look as though they come in a handy shipper carrying box and, since I'm flying over to USA and back on a 747, size, in this case, is important(!)

So, I've browsed around the Web and looked at Donaldson's site and checked out their outlets, but am none the wiser.

Can anyone tell me where in Los Angeles area, San Diego area, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Reno, Sacremento or San Francisco I can pick up a Blackwing (these are the major cities I will be driving through in Septmber)? Even if I have to order it ahead, but I'd rather drive in and drive out with one in a box to bring home.

If I can't drive in/drive out with one, anyone know where I can order one and have it delivered to a friends address state-side and pick it up when I get there?

Thanks folks.

Donaldson's website lists the following info as a distributor in Australia:

Australia
New South Wales
Phone: 61-2-4352-2022, Fax: 61-2-4351-2036

You might check with them about the BlackWing.

Cheers

I spoke to the Donaldson Branch out here. No help. They had never imported a Blackwing for any Corvette people and were not even unaware that Donaldson produced such a thing. They suggested that if I had an alternative way to get one (such as going to the States myself) I should do that, because it would be 'a bit of a hassle' for them to do it -- so much for customer service (customer what? Sorry, we haven't imported that one yet either!).

Regarding cleaning/replacement, Donaldson's web site states that the filters used are able to be easily cleaned and re-used because they are some fancy 'new' fibre, but I will look into it further before I leave here to travel.

Regarding oil changes, I had previously seen the comment about increased oil changes due to 'bottom breathing' air intakes inducting more dirt when I was browsing around originally, so that will be a definite requirement.

Here's a funny story -- every year for the last 3 years, I have travelled to Vegas for a convention (I'm involved in supplying special computer systems to the gaming industry, so it's like an annual pilgrimage to Mecca). Every year, I've intended renting a 'vette for a day, just to have the pleasure of driving one, only to balk at the last minute when I considered the exhorbitant price they want. Last year, I decided to do it anyway, but genuinely ran out of time (with other commitments) so I said 'DEFINITELY next year!'. Anyway, this year I won't even bother -- why do it when I now drive one EVERY DAMN DAY! EEHARRR!

'Vette's Rule! And aren't they cool!

Keep in touch and thanks for the feedback.

Oh Well, it was worth a shot.

I used to "dream" about renting a Vette in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, years ago when visiting my brother there. I always choked at the daily rate, which could get you a nice Chrysler convertible for an entire week at the same price.

Now, I simply miss the Coupe when I'm down there and can't wait to get back home so I can drive it again.

You know Vettes are cool when you've been driving one for a year and you still think "Whoa, that's a great looking car" and it's yours! Lets hope that feeling never, ever goes away, even when the C6s arrive.

AH DAMMIT!! Why did you have to give me that link?!?!?

I can't possibly go to that shop -- I'd end up broke for a year!!

What an incredible list of goodies! It will be a definite stopover for me, but I will ask my girl (in a sober moment before we get there) to keep my credit card in her bag!

Seriously, thanks for the lead - looks like it's right in line with my travel plans and they have lots of things I want, including the Blackwing.

I'll be contacting them by email shortly and make sure my shopping list is ready when I get there.

Again, thanks for the llead.

Regards,

Peter

Two choices I am aware in the LA Area -

West Coast Corvettes carries a Blackwing - prince around $260 US. They are located in Placentia - Orange County area.

LAPD (Los Angeles Preformance Division) - in Van Nuys (I think) has the Blackwing around $300 US.

Best of luck.

You're welcome Peter. Make sure you let them know about us! :)

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Check around...several places have them for 200 bux...some with free shipping to perhaps a city you're passing through?

Xtreme MotorSports in Tempe have it listed on their Web site at $210 and I'm going to be travelling stratight through Tempe, so I guess that's about as good as you can get.

Thanks for the feedback, folks.

Regards,

Peter

Just got back from USA -- picked up the following at Xtreme MotorSports in Tempe Arizona:

Donaldson Blackwing
Volant Air Bridge
Throttle Body Bypass Kit
Z06 Intake Manifold

I can't speak highly enough of Xtreme and Nate Caro, who was helpful to the 'Xtreme'! He did not try to oversell to me and was very obviously knowledgeable. He spent a lot of time with me when I dropped in late on a Saturday morning and did not begrudge me the info he provided, as well as having everything I wanted in stock. Even better, I saved almost $300 on the cost of buying the parts in Los Angeles (at another 'vette specialist) and that's just 'before tax'.

I will definitely be doing more business with them, albeit across the Web.

Oh, and the parts worked really well when I fitted them yesterday-- lot's more HP and torque (seat-of-the-pants measure). I overlooked the 170F thermostat because I thought I had one, but my memory was wrong and so is the thermostat, but the thermo is easy to fix (pity about the memory).

I'll now be looking for some more boost for easy bucks, but a supercharger is looking very appealing. Long headers and a Corsa exhaust system will probably come first though.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback before I went, everyone -- it helped with my buying decisions and location.

Regards,

Peter :beer
